Lumia Denim update allows some Nokia Lumia models to download OS updates to microSD card

Lumia Denim update allows some Nokia Lumia models to download OS updates to microSD card
Thanks to the installation of the Lumia Denim update, or the developers preview, if your Nokia Lumia device is rockin' software version 8.10.14219.341 or higher, your phone can download OS updates to a microSD card. This is the word directly from Microsoft, who posted the information on its own website under the heading of an FAQ.

The models that support the use of a microSD card to capture an OS download include the Nokia Lumia 530/530 Dual SIM, Nokia Lumia 630/630 Dual SIM, Nokia Lumia 635, Nokia Lumia 636,Nokia Lumia 638, Nokia Lumia 730 Dual SIM, Nokia Lumia 735 and Nokia Lumia 830. The list of Lumia handsets with a microSD slot that do not support this new feature include the Nokia Lumia 520, Nokia Lumia 525, Nokia Lumia 620, Nokia Lumia 625, Nokia Lumia 720, Nokia Lumia 820, Nokia Lumia 1320 and Nokia Lumia 1520.

If  you need to know which software version is presently on your Nokia Lumia phone, Microsoft says you should go to the App list, tap Settings > About > More info. If your phone is supposed to support the new feature, but for an unknown reason you can't download an OS update to your microSD card, you need to wait for the next update to your phone for this feature to be enabled.

All WP8.1-capable devices with MicroSD slots support at least 128GB MicroSD cards. Considering the OS can also handle up to 64 cores, it wouldn't surprise me that if/when even greater storage capacities are available they'll easily be supported. It's a modern OS for modern users, not something designed a decade ago.

Is that so? I don't know that since Android phones state they support SD card up to a certain amount.

It's weird, they all support up to the greatest amount at the time, then when a bigger one comes out, they just advertise it supports the bigger one. The real reason up to 32 gigs, they are SDHC, and those that are 64 gigs and above are SDXC. So as long as the SD cards stay SDXC, it will support them, as big as it is. Now for devices that only go up to 32 gigs, you could reformat a bigger card to SDHC and might work, but it is a crapshot. Depends on the card. And all of this info came from me needing to upgrade the SD card in my 3DS XD.

I have always hesitated to buy a 128gb SD card for my xperia Z. Guess I just gave to try.

As long as it supports 64 gigs, it should be fine. And if it doesn't for any reason, just return it.

If it supports the sdxc standards then it should be able to support 128GB - 2TB (theoretical limits). The 128GB limit is due to lack of larger capacity sd cards.

Good feature to have. I wish the next win 10 to be as flexible and customisable as desktop windows edition. I like Windows Mobile 5, 6, 6.5 better. Used to use it as my second phone. One Nokia Symbian and the other Windows Mobile. Perfect!

That is actually the exact same SD card I have in my phone. And this could be useful for phones with low memory, but I think it is always better to put the OS on the phone itself.

Its just referring to the OS patch installation file that will eventually be installed into the device primary storage. Its a good feature to have.
