HTC spills red ink with its preliminary Q2 earnings report

HTC spills red ink with its preliminary Q2 earnings report
The HTC One M9 and all of its variants do not seem to be resonating with the smartphone buying public. The company just released a preliminary look at its second quarter numbers, and they are not good. For the three month period ending in June, the company reported an operating loss of $166.2 million USD. Revenue totaled $1.07 billion USD. The company's net loss after taxes was $256 million USD, which works out to a quarterly loss of 31 U.S. cents per share.

HTC's second quarter was in stark contrast to the profitable first quarter that HTC reported. That three month period saw HTC bank profits of $11.6 million USD on revenue of $1.3 billion USD.

Realizing that the HTC One M9 is not going to compete with the Samsung Galaxy S6, Samsung Galaxy S6 edge, Apple iPhone 6, Apple iPhone 6 Plus and the LG G4, the company announced that it would be unveiling a redesigned flagship "hero" phone in October. Reportedly named the HTC Aero, the phone is said to employ new imaging technology for its rear camera.

Can a new phone turn around HTC? A 180 degree turn is going to require that the company improves its marketing. This weekend, we saw a good indication that this is possible with a series of blind test ads for the HTC One M9. This is the best marketing campaign we've seen from HTC's camp in a long, long time.

This phone honestly blows the S6 out of the water. I bought the S6 and i hate it! Yes, there is still terrible lag in the "all new redesigned touchwiz". i feel bad for HTC, they made a great phone that isn't getting the recognition of profits it deserves

I have both and the experience has been the complete opposite to me. My GS6 has been fantastic and my M9 stutters and lags more than I remember my M8 did.

The s6 is the fastest phone I have used and I have used a good range of them it 100% makes the note 4 look slow, there is no way the htc is faster it can not even keep up with the G4. This is all down to the new ufs 2.0 being used

S6 is fast, intuitive and smooth. M8 can own m9 anytime anywhere. Even m8 camera and battery life is better than m9 in real world use. Trust me, I've seen these 3 gadgets go toe to toe everyday in my workplace.

Agree. I was choosing between S6 and M9,and when i held one in my hand, than another,I choose M9. It feels better in my hand and this is a beautifull phone. Internet portalls like this one made M9 underdog! And he is not!! Nobody talk about speakers, nobody, but boy,uf... This is THE great sound and no other phone is not even close to that sound! Go strong and proud HTC!!

It is now or never for htc.. They need to change thier device portfolio entirely. Make the desire series cheaper with specs that can match the Chinese brands. They also need to come up with one true flagship and not some 3 or 4 devices a month or two after the release of the flagship with better or matching specs. And most importantly, they need to provide better after sales service support in countries like India

What htc really needs is new management.

Game over HTC. You guys made amazing premium phones but there isn't a real change with the newest models along with the subpar camera. Time to join blackberry.

Sd 810 , Poor Camera optics. . "blew" it off... A lesson for OEMs to invest in R&Ds like Sammy. .. not always rely fully on other mfgs. . Sammy aiming to be it's own king in all areas of hardware and software (Tizen). •Bm ™

My thoughts exactly. A price cut would make it more compelling.

They need to change design... its too much of the same. The average consumer buys a phone based on physical appearances.

I have had nothing but problems with HTC. All of it hardware related. The last one broke my heart- I got the M8 for Windows, and I loved it. Loved the audio, loved the design, loved the way Windows Phone 8.1 ran on it, heck even loved the way they designed the on-screen buttons. But 2 returns later, I just gave up. On both of mine, the screens would hard freeze and no amount of work could get them to work. Once it stopped in the middle of web site loading. All I had on my phone was the three dots WP uses during transition. Would have been funny if it was happening to someone else. My Daughters fiancé owns the M8 for Android, and his phone has screen problems as well. HTC- you did this to yourself. No sympathy. LG has vastly improved, Samsung reinvented itself, and so many other options out there actually deserve a chance. HTC is just no longer a respected name.

Any hero can't save them alone even if it turnes out a pretty good phone. They doesn't get the fact they are fighting for survive not for taking the throne. They don't have hundreds of millions blind loyal customers. Their fan base isn't big enough, their brand name isn't strong enough.

I'm not locked into any brand, and opposed to very few brands, so I would certainly consider it, even though I wouldn't consider the M9.

October is too far away. There is no excitement from the news about the Aero and no one is willing to give HTC another chance. I need to know what the phone will look like now. They need to start showing the public their drawings of the phone and tell us about the specs if they want any kind of attention to bring customers back.

A "hero" phone? Sounds desperate. Even if it is a strong phone, it would take a series of successful releases to reverse the trend that HTC is currently on. The sad thing is, the Htc One (M7) was an excellent start. They just blew it with subsequent releases. I do wish them well. I the HTC phones I had with Verizon were excellent phones in the day.

Please do something that's different in a big way cause your device wasn't bad but it wasn't good either.

The One M9 sucks. It is overpriced, has a horrible camera, and is basically the same thing as the M8
