Google changes name of Nexus 5 launcher; move could signal its availability soon on Google Play Store
Google has updated its Google Search app on Wednesday and this simple move has led to a number of interesting possibilities. First, besides adding the usual bug fixes and performance enhancers to the search app, the update also changes the name of the Nexus 5 launcher to the Google Now launcher. parts of the launcher are found in the Search app and back in November, we told you that the Nexus 5 launcher had a strong connection to Google Search.

If you go to Settings> Home > menu after updating the Search app, you should find the new name of the launcher staring you in the face. And those of you who sideloaded the Nexus 5 launcher on their handset should see a splash screen (image below) after the update.

Does this all mean that the heralded Nexus 5 Google Now launcher will soon be made available to other Android users via the Google Play Store? Stay tuned.

I'd love the new launcher to be in the app store. Though I came up with its APK for my tablet after it got the OTA KitKat update, I'd love to see it updated automatically.

I think this is Google's move to counter the Magazine UX. A free launcher with Google experience sin e Magazine UX cannot be turned of.

Yes it will be great to have this come out officially and be optimised for the other nexus devices and even the other android devices but launchers like Nova, apex and action launcher still have greater functionality. I'm still waiting on stock launchers being able to use custom icon packs!

You can change the icons using the Icons Changer app.

I wish they would. The launcher's pretty lightweight for an ordinary launcher

While I have a Nexus 5, I do like the idea of Google putting the launcher in the Play Store. You can almost have a Nexus device, without having to worry about which version of Android you have.
