Apple announces March 21 press event - 4-inch iPhone SE and new iPad Air incoming?

Apple today confirmed that it's going to host a press event on March 21, where - as previously rumored - the company is expected to announce a brand new iPhone. More exactly, on that day, Apple is likely going to unveil a 4-inch iPhone that may be called iPhone SE.

As you probably know, at the moment, the only 4-inch smartphone that Apple is still selling is the iPhone 5s (initially released in September 2013). The iPhone SE would replace the 5s, reportedly bringing features like Apple's A9 processor (the same that's powering the iPhone 6s series), Apple Pay, a 12 MP rear camera, and 16 GB to 64 GB of internal memory. The iPhone SE could cost around $400 - $500, thus being on par from this point of view with the iPhone 5s (prices for which start at $450). Quite many people seem to be excited about this new 4-inch iPhone.

A new generation iPad Air might also be announced during the March 21 event, as the iPad Air 2 (introduced back in October 2014) is getting a bit long in the tooth.

As you can see above, the tagline of the March 21 event is "Let us loop you in", though we don't really know what Apple is trying to tell us with that. Anyhow, we're impatiently waiting to see exactly what the Cupertino giant has in store for us. What about you?

The invite looks like a bunch of things coming together, with the added "Loop you in", it is possible that they could be introducing something along the lines of Microsoft's "Convergence" technology. They already do have some apps that converge between devices, but this could be a more full-scale type deal.

I thought this was announced some time ago. Guess I misread somewhere.

It's 2016. There shouldn't be any new phone that starts out at only 16GB of internal memory, especially one that will cost an arm and a leg like the iPhone SE.

Seems like a backward way of thinking. While I agree that 16GB is very little, the fact that it is 2016 is relevant. Cloud storage, streaming music, streaming movies. My phone merely stores apps now. All my documents, music, photos, etc are cloud based.

That is the stupidest argument ever. Because NOT having 16GB doesn't take those features away all of a sudden. One thing I will never understand about iFans is how they justify 16 GB + 4 features to be somehow better than 32GB + 4 features. Somehow, the latter is the "backwards" way of thinking. Apps are getting larger and larger as screen res and their features increase. 16 GB is pitiful for a 450+ phone.

I'm with FF, and Landon on this... 16 GB is just ridiculous even 2 years ago... I would not be happy with 32 GB either. I need minimum 64 GB to feel comfortable (those 240fps slo-mo's take major space). That's why, I'm excited that apple is feeling the hurt with sales (according to recent articles). This should push apple to be #1 again... Standard should be 64/128/256!!!

They are reacting to that hurt by introducing this iPhone SE. Cook and crew have put the drop in sales down to a lack of a smaller phone and therefore, storage sizes will likely remain for another year until the iPhone 7s. Even this phone everyone expects at 450 but I can guarantee you right now that it will debut at 550 and Apple will kill the iPhone 6 with it to push people to costlier devices.

Totally agree with you guys but please understand that there are quite many people that don't need more than 16gb. They just don't need it so this is the option for them, my brother has 4S 16gb and ha 40+ apps on it and doesn't complain. I'm going to get 64gb as soon as it hits the stores, shame that there will be no 128 bcoz my itunes library is 90gb but having 64 teaches me to be more ergonomic ;P

Why not set up iTunes Match or better yet - NAS. I access my hardrive at home for movies or music or files or etc. I got a 64gb but mostly because I make lots of movies and draw a lot. I also make and edit site plans for work on my iPhone an iPad. But I try to record at 120 fps most of the time to give me absolute adjustment for speed when creating movies. 64 Gb is the minimum. Great games like RR3 and AfterPulse are space hungry as well. My drafting software is not that light either. My wife has 16 GB 6s - and she's never reaching the limit, after I showed her how to offload photos and videos wirelessly back when we had a 5s - she keeps an organized phone. Unfortunately I keep too many projects on my phone and they're space hoggers.

The iPhone SE is Apple's so called "budget" phone. They typically only have 8 gigs in the past. 16 gigs would be an upgrade. I would somewhat agree that the flagships need to offer at least 32 gigs, but you can get by with 16 if you no longer store all your music locally and you use cloud storage.

It's 2016. There shouldn't be any new phone that has removable battery and microSD. #lastcentury

How bad does it hurt when you have to pay $100 for an additional 48GB or 64GB of storage? (Currently a 200GB SanDisk Micro SDXC Card is $79.99 on Amazon). #ouch

That's b/c you're forward looking and to pay attention to anything apple is doing is to look backwards.

Not sure of talking about apples updates or the forward moving android updates - majority of users still don't have lollipop - that doesn't seem that forward to me - actually that's the definition of backwards compared to iOS users I mean looking forward soon everyone would be sporting lollipop 5.x (or is that looking backwards?). Hey, you tried to troll, but you asked for this... Android has been adding iOS features all these years, even "N" is adding iOS features - don't be ignorant.

The 9.3 betas have been great on my 6S Plus and Air 2. YMMV.
