Alleged renders of the HTC U come to light (UPDATE)

As March was coming to an end, a rumor about HTC's next flagship phone started taking flight. According to this speculation, the phone will be called the HTC U, and features a 5.5-inch display carrying a 1440 x 2560 resolution. The Snapdragon 835 chipset will power the device, which means that it will feature an octa-core CPU and the Adreno 540 GPU. HTC's Sense 9 UI will be on board, and the handset will come with 64GB and 128GB of expandable native storage. A 12MP camera will be found in back, while a 16MP selfie shooter adorns the front of the unit.

UPDATE:
According to a report published today, the render at the top of this story is a photoshopped HTC U Play. Not only do the dimensions of the rendered handset match those of the U Play, a picture of the HTC U Play in the same exact pose pretty much confirms that the HTC U render is fake.

Today, renders allegedly showing off the HTC U (nicknamed "Ocean") were disseminated by SlashLeaks. If the renders are legit, the new handset will offer thin side bezels and trimmer top and bottom bezels. Dual speakers are on the bottom of the device, along with a Type-C USB port between them. Oddly enough, the renders fail to show a power button, fingerprint scanner or volume controls. Could HTC have embedded all of these buttons under the glass display? We should know sometime late this month when the phone is expected to be unveiled. The launch is supposed to take place early in May.

Last week, a phone called the HTC CBP appeared on AnTuTu equipped with the same specs that we expect for the HTC U. With an expected late April introduction of the HTC U, we should see the number of leaks increase over the next few weeks. Feel free to check in often.
