Acer to produce a wearable smartband to be released in June or July
With everyone and their Uncle entering the wearables business, it is no surprise that Taiwan based Acer will be joining the party. No, Acer is not throwing its hat into the smartwatch market. It is, however, aiming at another increasingly crowded wearable field. Acer is looking to produce a fitness band. The band will most likely enhance its capabilities, by pairing with a smartphone or tablet.

Acer is also looking to find a hospital or fitness center to partner with. The idea is to offer a very useful health-related tool. An anonymous source told a Chinese publication that the Acer smartband will be equipped with a small screen. The source added that the manufacturer wants to create a whole new ecosystem around the device, which is expected to ship around the first half of this year.

With nearly every major firm releasing, or scheduled to release, a smartwatch and/or fitness band, the market for wearable devices is skyrocketing upward. For example, research firm IDC expects that global shipments of wearables will soar at a compounded annual growth rate of 78.4% from 2014 to 2018. During that time period, the number of wearables shipped is expected to soar from 19 million units to 112 million units, led by fitness related wearable devices.

Thanks for the tip!
