The foldable iPad generated significant buzz in 2025, when a wave of leaks suggested it was closer to reality than most observers had assumed. Reputable Apple insider Mark Gurman subsequently reported the project had been pushed back.
Apple announced its first foldable device, the iPhone Duo, in September 2026, which confirms that Apple is indeed working on foldable devices. That said, the Duo's own launch was pretty limited – availability began October 23, weeks after the announcement.
If Apple is still working through production challenges on a phone-sized foldable, a 20-inch foldable iPad represents a considerably more complex undertaking.

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has reported that the foldable iPad may feature a built-in kickstand constructed from carbon fiber.
Meanwhile, Apple is reportedly exploring under-display Face ID, with the transmitter and receiver components tucked beneath the screen to eliminate any visible cutout. More recent rumors suggest this particular approach hasn't gone smoothly, though specifics on what went wrong remain unclear.
The device's overall form factor is, by all current accounts, still being worked out internally, so we don't have a finalized design leaked.
A newer report claims the foldable iPad may share its hinge design with the foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, which was announced on September 9, 2026.
The Duo's hinge is built from over 100 components, uses a variable torque profile for controlled opening at any angle, and includes an integrated magnet array for closure. A 3D-printed titanium hinge cover with a micro-blasted finish handles the exterior.
If Apple scales that architecture to a larger format, crease management on a 20-inch panel becomes the key unknown. The geometry of folding at that scale introduces challenges that a phone-sized hinge doesn't fully address.

A foldable iPad running iPadOS would likely extend that thinking further. iPadOS already supports more complex multitasking than iOS, and a 20-inch canvas gives Apple considerably more room to work with than the Duo's 7.6-inch inner display.
Apple Pencil support feels like a natural fit for a device at this scale and price point, and would be a reasonable expectation – though nothing has been confirmed.
