Spotify stops support for Windows Phone app (UPDATE)

The update that Spotify sent out for its Windows Phone app in February 2015 will be that app's final update. The music streamer has decided that it no longer is worth it to add the newest features for the small number of Windows Phone users. Yes, that hardy bunch will still have access to the app, but it will continue to fall behind the capabilities of the iOS and Android versions of Spotify.

UPDATE: Spotify reached out to tell us that this story is based on a tweet that was incorrectly released. As it turns out, Spotify has sent out an update to its Windows Phone 8.1 app today. This new version, 5.2, also includes support for Windows 10. Spotify has issued a statement: "Our main goal at Spotify is to offer the best music experience on the market, covering all platforms. To clarify our recent information regarding the Windows Phone experience, we will continue supporting the Windows Phone 8.1 experience moving forward and we are actually improving our support for Windows 10 in our coming update 5.2, which will be available starting today."

As for a Windows 10 version of Spotify, the company says that it can't say if or when such a release will be out. But at the same time, it did say that if such an app was created users would receive a notification that the update was ready to be installed.

Spotify has 75 million users at last count, with 20 million paid subscribers and 55 million using the free, ad-supported tier of service.
