The state of the Vision Pro inside Apple is sad to witness as an XR enthusiast

Things aren't looking too promising for the future of the Vision Pro inside Apple.

Apple released an updated Vision Pro not too long ago with a faster chip and a handful of nice-to-haves, but that was pretty much about it. The price — the main reason that the headset continues to fail to sell — was not reduced and, apparently, the state of the Vision Pro inside the company is a sad state of affairs.

Apple Vision Pro development on “life support”

According to industry insider Mark Gurman in his newsletter Power On, the state of the Vision Pro development inside Apple is on “life support”. The company isn’t particularly keen on spending more resources on the project, but the Vision Pro’s most senior leaders keep pressing the upper brass to not give up on it just yet.

What should Apple focus on instead of the Vision Pro?

Shifting priorities inside the company

Ex-CEO Tim Cook was obsessed with Apple getting a pair of consumer-grade smart glasses to market to compete with Meta, Samsung, Google, and the other manufacturers jumping into this space.

Meta, in particular, has all but dominated the smart glasses market, especially with its latest models that were announced earlier this week. For most of Apple’s top brass, focusing on the Vision Pro seems like a fool’s errand.

Nevertheless, though new CEO John Ternus wasn’t a believer in the Vision Pro initially, he recently defended the headset in an interview. That seems to suggest that Apple might not be giving up on it just yet.

A letdown for early adopters

I don’t think that it would be an exaggeration to say that, for most buyers, their Vision Pro has become a professional dust-gathering machine. Apple has essentially been drip-feeding content as interest in the headset has dried up over time, though some users still swear by it.

If the company does abandon future MR (Mixed Reality) headsets, then the Vision Pro is going to become a very expensive letdown for everyone who rushed to get one on launch day.

I hope it stays around because I think it has potential

The Apple Vision Pro, in my opinion, has a lot of potential. Apple’s entry into the XR (Extended Reality) market could have served as a much-needed boost for the entire industry had the headset not been priced so unreasonably.

I think that the Vision Pro can still have a very bright future. Apple just needs to drop the unnecessary bits and reduce the price drastically. Given what the company has achieved with the MacBook Neo and the iPhone Duo, I don’t think that this is impossible, either.
