iPhone Duo screen protector guide: should you install a screen protector on the Duo
The iPhone Duo is a costly purchase, and it might even be your first foldable phone, so should you go the extra mile and install a screen protector to keep it safe?

Good question, so let’s explore that. Should you install a screen protector on the iPhone Duo?
Actually, the iPhone Duo already comes with a screen protector

Chances are, the iPhone Duo is the first time you’re getting interested in foldable smartphones or even the first time you’re hearing about them. So here’s a little secret I’ll let you in on, basically all modern foldable phones come with a screen protector installed on the inner display. That’s the larger display that you access by unfolding the phone.
The folding glass used for foldable phones is very fragile and prone to damage if you don’t properly care for it. To reduce the chances of severe damage, phone manufacturers ship their foldable phones with a screen protector already applied.
The iPhone Duo also ships with a screen protector already installed on the internal display. This is the special “nano-texture” coating that Apple showed off, which reduces glare and hides the display crease that results from folding the display.

When you get the Duo in your hands, you might notice that the inner display feels like it has a layer that can be peeled off. It can, and you absolutely shouldn't. This is the nano-texture coating mentioned above and it doubles as a screen protector.
How do these protective layers function?

These pre-applied screen protectors protect the internal display from your fingernails and grains of sand or dust particles. Even if the screen protector gets scratched, the underlying display remains untouched, just like how screen protectors function on traditional phones.
Unlike with traditional phones, however, manufacturers strongly advise against replacing these screen protectors yourself, and Apple is no different. If you ever feel the need to have your iPhone Duo’s matte layer replaced, you’ll need to go to an Apple store.

Thankfully, it’s not too expensive to get the screen protector changed on a foldable. With AppleCare+, the matte layer on the iPhone Duo can be replaced for $19. Without AppleCare+, the replacement will run you $49 instead.
And you will most likely need to have this layer replaced some day. The screen protectors on the inner displays of foldable phones usually start peeling off after a while. Some get bubbles in them or lift up from the center. Using the phone like this runs the risk of irreparably damaging the internal display and a replacement of the screen protector is highly recommended.
The external display is different

It’s worth noting that the external display on the iPhone Duo — the smaller screen that you mainly use when the phone is folded — is different. This display does not come with a screen protector pre-installed.
Also, this screen works just like a standard screen on a traditional phone. It’s not fragile foldable glass, it’s the normal glass that most phones use. If you’ve used a traditional iPhone before, you know what to expect in terms of scratch resistance and drop protection here.

When it comes to the larger internal display on the iPhone Duo, no. You do not need to install a screen protector. In fact, you shouldn’t even consider installing a screen protector on the internal display.
What protection will you give your iPhone Duo?

Phone manufacturers strongly advise against installing any third-party screen protectors on the internal displays of foldable phones, no matter what fanciful claims the packaging might make. These screen protectors mess with the precise engineering that goes into these phones, which can lead to damaging the hinge and the internal display because the phone is unable to fold properly.
Installing a screen protector on the external display is perfectly fine, however. Treat it like you’ve treated your previous phones. If you usually use a screen protector, then you should use a screen protector for the external display of the iPhone Duo as well.
