Google Health is finally building an off switch for its AI Coach. Code in the latest app update points to a new Coaching section that strips out the commentary and leaves your plain numbers behind. Welcome news whether you read your stats on a Pixel 10 Pro, an iPhone or a Pixel Watch 4, one of the best Android smartwatches.

Google Health is quietly building a mute button for Coach

A new report digging through the code of Google Health v5.04.1 turned up strings for a Coaching section inside the app's settings, with two choices sitting in it. Standard keeps the full messages from Coach, while No Coach insights leaves you with basic updates and no commentary at all.

There is a catch worth knowing about, though. Another string spells out that whatever you pick only applies to future messages, so the insights already sitting in your feed are staying exactly where they are.

It should be noted that this is an APK teardown, which means the feature was pulled from work-in-progress code rather than anything Google has announced. Features spotted this way do not always make it out.

Why an off switch matters more than it sounds

The frustration has been building for weeks. People on the official Google Health community and on Reddit have described opening the app to paragraphs of AI commentary where clean, scannable metrics used to be, and the report notes that downvoting a recommendation or asking the Coach to stop did not change its behavior.

If you wear an Apple Watch or a Galaxy Watch, none of this touches you today, since neither Apple Health nor Samsung Health drops unprompted AI commentary on top of your dashboard. Still, Apple is rumored to be working on its own AI health coaching, so it is worth keeping half an eye on. Whether you can switch that layer off may end up mattering more than what it says.

Who stands to gain from this

The people who benefit most are subscribers who want their raw data back. Google Health Premium runs $9.99 a month or $99 a year, which we broke down when Google put the Coach behind that paywall, and the Coach is the main thing you are paying for.

Being able to quiet the part you do not want, without giving up the app you already track everything in, is a fair deal. Just keep in mind that Google has not announced any of this or given a timeline, and that your existing feed will not tidy itself up the moment you flip the setting.

I did not think I would want this, but here we are

I never really had a problem with how often the Coach chimed in. It was genuinely useful while I was building a routine around it, something we said when the weekly fitness plans arrived.

Over the past few months, though, I noticed it getting a little tiring. Some mornings I just want to see how I slept and where my step count is, not read a paragraph about it, so a mute switch is very welcome at this point.

What I am really hoping for is a middle setting rather than all or nothing, something closer to a short summary than a full essay. For now I will happily take the off switch, and I would love to see Google let us decide how chatty the Coach gets.
