How to transfer files to your new Samsung Galaxy Note 9 from an older Galaxy model

So you just took home your new Samsung Galaxy Note 9 to replace your older Samsung Galaxy model. Now comes the part that some find fun and others find a chore; moving over your files from the older device to your brand spanking new Galaxy Note 9. For a few years now, Samsung has offered a feature called Smart Switch to make this process quite easy, if not exactly quick.

Today, Samsung released a video tutorial showing how to use Smart Switch on the Galaxy Note 9. This is all you need to do:

  • Connect the two devices using the Smart Switch adapter.
  • When asked which application to open, select Smart Switch.
  • Read the Introduction.
  • Press start and agree to the Terms of Service.
  • Press receive on the Galaxy Note 9.
  • Agree to the permissions requested.
  • Tap "Allow" on your older Galaxy handset.
  • Choose which files you want transferred.
  • Sit back and wait for Smart Switch to move over the files.
  • When the process is finished, press on "close app."
Once the process is over and everything checks out, your Samsung Galaxy Note 9 is ready to be shown off to your friends and family. Now comes the hard part: installing enough new apps and taking enough pictures and videos to justify spending $1,249.99 for the model sporting 512GB of internal storage.

I wish Smart Switch could be installed in the secure folder to transfer from one secure folder to the next as well.

Why should we need another app, that's the whole point of Smart Switch, it just doesn't do 50% of what it needs to.

How to transfer files from an old iPhone to a new? Just sign in with the apple account and the new iPhone has all the files of the old. iCloud does everything for you. I remember saving locations on google maps back in 2011 on my iPhone 4. Years later when I upgraded to iPhone 5s I realized that all locations from Google maps had been automatically transfered to Apple Maps without doing anything but only signing my iPhone 5s with my Apple account. Returning back to the palace I had saved locations of bars , restaurants and other sights I was surprised to see all those bookmarks to still be there but this time on Apple’s map app. The same applies for every apple device signed with the same account. I see notes created on my iPhone 4 on my bright new iPhone 8 plus and iPad 2018. Samsung seems to be years behind on cloud services. I don’t know if they have any cloud. If they had they wouldn’t need cables and manual transfer of stuff.

I can give you an easy one: put old SD card in new phone. 10 secs and is done. Google and Samsung clouds will do the rest of syncs notes, POI on maps and so on.

When was the last time you used a Samsung phone? Samsung has a cloud service. and you can backup all your mobile devices to it and restore backups to a knew device. However, unlike iCloud, older Samsung devices don't have Samsung Cloud baked in, and depending on how old, you can't install it either. so that is what the cable and adapter is for. Also, you ever consider times you don't have internet access. Of fast enough? Suppose your backup is 5GB in size? That takes at least 2-4hours over a LTE or Comcast connection. While with the cable, it will take half as long. Because yeah, you're gonna blow all your data on using cloud storage? Also, Smart Switch can backup to your internal MicroSD card or an external USB. Which is what PA didn't show. And once its done, put USB/SDCARD into new phone, open Smart Switch and restore the backup. I did one of my Note 9's this way, and the entire process of 50GB took about 90 mins. and when I placed the card into my phone to restore data, I was still using it as it was doing its thing, only closing apps that need to be closed if I was using them.
