Sony beta testing 'a new concept Android software,' its Xperia UI may be in for redesign
Sony might be hard at work on a complete overhaul of its aging Xperia UI, a new invitation program reveals. Sony Mobile Sweden, where these tests usually go, has posted a search for beta testers on an “opportunity to trial a new concept Android software build for [the] Xperia Z3“. Now, Sony Sweden has put similar searches before, but they have been for trials of Android updates on Sony flagships, like the Lollipop beta testing announced late last year for the Z3, again from the Swedish offices.

Now, however, the situation seems to be different, as Sony is apparently testing “a concept Sony Android software version, with a fresh take on the Sony user experience“. Could this mean that the company is prepping a novel take on the Xperia UI for an upcoming flagship, maybe the Xperia Z5, and a potential update of its current warriors to the new coat of Android paint?

It very well could be, though companies are known to constantly test out stuff, then discard or change the plans significantly in the process. There have been several rumors that Sony will take a completely different design turn with its next flagship, probably the Z5, and a fresh new interface might be there along for the ride.

I seriously hope for a major UI update to come along the very much needed hardware design update

I don't see the need for a major UI update. Their current UI is good, it has a very stockish appearances. I like it. But there is still design inconsistence left here and there on their UI. I wish they just get rid of that. I hope they keep the stockish appearances.

Sony should add more and more, and more features into its new UI like that "Touch(the ground)wizard", we'd love to slow down our run too fast phone before it run away :-)

I fully agree. I often wish I had a nexus, due to better touch responsiveness, smoother frame rates and overall optimisation. But then I see the added functionality in Samsung devices and even the LG G3 combined with the irritable dropped frames. From audio tweaks to low light in camera/super smooth DIS in recording, Sony throws in powerful features that don't slow or lag the phone down. So i found Sony flagships to be the middle road between nexus strengths and added-functionality horses like the Galaxy series. A very good compromise. (If only they fixed they photography!) In fact, i like the look of their walkman app UI, What's New app and others like their video player etc. Really grown up (windowsesque dare I say), compared to lollipop.

l hope they also redesign their outdated omnibalance design.

That omnibalance doesn't need a redesign. They just need to reduce the bezels and make the phone more pocketable... I would love to see an even smaller compact successor..

I agree with you, but it's still not enough to make something fresh and new.

A 4.9inch fit into a z3 compact body will be sweet, and make it not as thick then will be awesome

They don't have to fix it. Even steve jobs praised Sony for their designs. Its glory is surely fading away but I don't think Xperia phones need a redesign. They just need more refinements, like better handling and camera.

Agreed. People jump to a phone with a innovative design. Designs count A LOT

Z5 will be a epic device or epic fail. I do hope it would be a good device (with SD820).

SD820 with 1080p on Z5 Compact (maybe) will be a beast in battery

What do you mean obsolete omnibalance design?????? Yes it has been on Sony phones for some time but other phonemakers are still copying it, like Huawei P8

Sony has awesome sensors but awful software.

They need complete overhaul of not just software but also hardware. Not taking anything away from the current design but changes do a lot of good. Especially considering their poor sales of late. They have been going through the motions. Waiting for qcom to release new chip, waiting for carriers to update policies, waiting for google to launch new android version. All they do is make minor changes to their cameras. Anyway I would love to see sony back in contention for best smartphone maker. It will definitely take some time (2-3 years).

Actually it'd just take a few months. All we need is a refreshing design that gets people excited.

Dear Sony, what ever happened to the Lollipop 5.1.1 update for the Xperia line and why haven't we heard a peep about it since you said it would begin in July.

A more customizable theming engine would be greatly appreciated.

Seriously?? I gave up on sony Xperia series they are crap and a low end budget device and glitchy android I had the Xperia z, z1s, z3 and all junk time to go ios9 apple iPhone im sick of Android viruses and pop ups and crashes etc!! And they say Iphones have issues? Ive used both and Android is by far the worst!! Android is quantity over quality apple is quality over quantity thats my opinions on both and used both ios and os

Ditch custom UI mods and use stock android UI...concentrate on performance enhancement/camera/audio etc.

This is exactly what sony needs, a new ui design and a new device design. hopefully the z5 will be killer. I've been wanting a sony phone for a while while but they have never lived up to what i wanted...... well the z3 compact did but i had already gotten a new phone so i missed out on it.

And they need to "redesign" their service center in Indonesia. It took my friend 6 fvckin months to get his z2 repaired.
