Sony Xperia Z5 Compact unveiled: 4.6" phone with Snapdragon 810

The Sony Xperia Z5 Compact has just broken cover and it's quite the rarity in today's world of supersized smartphones: it is a small-screen, compact and easily pocketable phone that does not make a compromise in terms of specs and ships with the latest and most powerful system chip out there.

The Xperia Z5 Compact comes in a choice of colors: Graphite Black, White, Yellow, and Coral.

Let's first take a quick look at the essential Sony Xperia Z5 Compact specs:

Platform: Android 5.1 Lollipop
Display: 4.6-inch IPS LCD display with a resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels
Processor: Snapdragon 810 system chip with 2GB of RAM
Storage: up to 32GB of internal storage expandable via microSD cards
Cameras: 1/2.3'' 23 MP Sony Exmor RS rear camera, front-facing selfie cam
Battery: 2700mAh battery
Connectivity: 4G LTE connectivity (cat. 6)

Good news is that all of the Xperia Z5 family of phones - including this here Z5 Compact - come with a fingerprint scanner built right in the side-positioned lock key.

Apart from the difference in screen size and battery, the Xperia Z5 Compact has all the other signature features of the Z5 family including the top-of-the-line Snapdragon 810 system chip, ultra-fast 23-megapixel camera with more phase-detection pixels for the industry's fastest 0.03-second auto focusing and full 4G LTE connectivity stack.

We're happy to see that the internal storage is expandable and that when looking in terms of pure size and dimensions, the 4.6-inch Xperia Z5 Compact is actually narrower than the iPhone 6. At the same time, though, its definitely on the bulky side: it measures 8.9mm thick.

We're yet to hear more details about the Xperia Z5 Compact price and release date.

How do you like this new Xperia Z5 Compact and does it live up to the expectations?

I'll get a compact too if it has the same image stabilization as the bigger Z5 Just read this on XB Enhanced optical image stabilisation "There's a new closed-loop actuator in the camera that controls the lens position. Essentially, this is adding a feedback loop to the previous open-loop actuator, aiming to make it more accurate. Sony claims that the new unit deals much better with controlling motion." http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/135084-sony-xperia-z5-camera-sample-images-and-new-tech-explained

Makes me laugh when now 4.6" is classed as a small phone.

i don't really understand why sony is so fond of those gradient/shade-fade wallpapers. they make the screens look ugly because of the fading effect. that phone would look better with a pure white background, as if the screen and the bezels are one and the same. i thought they already wanted to do flat designs.

More like a Bugatti Veyron motor in a Smart Fourtwo body and leaving out the intercoolers... Sure it will run but its just a matter of time before it fries....

Qualcom are probably paying Sony just to get rid of them SD810s since no one else wants them unless they're already stuck in a contract to use them.

Why Sony decline snapdragon 820 to z5 if sd 810 is killer of smartphones(htc m9, one plus, xiaomi, other)??

The snapdragon 820 will not be out until 2016. 810 is all they had. I would have rather seen an SD-808 in the Z5C than the SD-810 though....

Snapdragon 810 + v2.1 = Snapdragon 808 (with LG G4 no improve battery) It's sad. will have to see if it improves camera and battery of z5c...

The LG G4 is also pushing a 2k screen...There was never going to be an improvement in the G4 battery life. I would venture as far as to say that had LG used the SD-810 the battery life would have been worse...

There's a mistake in your specs: it has only 2GB of ram (just follow the link in this article to the official specs on the sony site)

RAM is 2GB, not 3 ;(

Lower resolution screens need less ram.

True, but the main reason for having more RAM is multitasking and 2GB isn't really enough in a high end phone and it certainly won't be in a year or 2's time.

In addition to the Z5, Sony will launch the Z5 compact with a 4.6-inch screen but "without compromising on any of the features." - Kaz Harai. So much for "without compromising on any of the features". Compact has 1GB less. Both phones should've had 4GB RAM.
