Samsung wants to buy BlackBerry for $7.5 billion (update: BlackBerry denies)
Samsung is reportedly in talks with BlackBerry to buy the Canadian company for up to $7.5 billion, sources familiar with the matter tell Reuters.
Reuters has it that executives from Samsung and BlackBerry met last week to analyze an eventual deal, and are now working with advisers to see how and if the purchase can go through. It’s said that Samsung proposed to offer from $13.35 to $15.49 per share - this represents at least 38% over BlackBerry’s trading price.
Even if BlackBerry is currently barely relevant in the smartphone industry, the company has a rich patent portfolio (related to both hardware, and software), and Reuters reports that this is the main reason why Samsung wants the acquisition to happen.
Following the news of a possible deal with Samsung, BlackBerry shares jumped up to 30% today.
Back in November 2014, Samsung and BlackBerry signed a deal to integrate BlackBerry Enterprise Server 12 into Samsung's KNOX security platform on select Galaxy phones and tablets. Things have escalated quickly since then, isn’t it?

BlackBerry’s policy is not to comment on rumors or speculation, and accordingly it does not intend to comment further.
It's worth mentioning that Reuters is a highly credible source, but for now we'll just have to go with BlackBerry's official statement on the matter.
