Mobile Players Land Millions In Funding

Wireless companies appear to be holding their own in the venture-capital arena, according to a recent report from Rutberg & Co.(web site) earlier this month, the firm found that investors poured $747 million into 113 mobile-sector companies during the second quarter of this year -- relatively steady compared with the previous quarter.

Sonim Technologies, a developer of IP-based instant voice communication systems for mobile-data networks, this week says it received $18.6 million in first-found financing from a group of investors led by 3i and Apax Partners .

''Following much hype about various 'killer apps' for wireless data, what seems to have been forgotten is that the primary use of the mobile phone is voice communication,'' says John Burns, president and CEO of Sonim. ''With this round of funding, we now have the team as well as the momentum to deliver the next generation of voice communication services.''
