Apple Maps gets punked as phony street names appear on the application
Users of Apple Maps trying to find their way around Kabul in Afghanistan, might have done a double take at seeing such street names as "Bad Monkey" and "Hillbilly Hameed" using Apple Maps in the capital city of the country. Yaroslav Trofimov, The Wall Street Journal's Kabul bureau chief spotted the phony names and tweeted the information with the hashtag #TooGoodToBeTrue.

Those made-up street names came from OpenStreetMap data and were added a few years ago by Afghan students either as a prank or as a way to temporarily name a road in dispute. OpenStreetMap is a mapping service that can be edited by users and has been heavily relied upon by Apple to fill out its beleaguered Apple Maps application. It is another black eye for a mapping service that police in Australia called "life-threatening" for its potential to take users into a dangerous section of the Outback with little hope of survival.

OpenStreetMap Team director Kate Chapman said that the problem could have come from Apple using "an old snapshot of the OpenStreetMap data and [not updating] it since, so things like 'personal' street names are in there, even if they have been fixed since." Chapman finds it interesting that while Apple used OpenStreetMap for Kabul, it do not do so for an area like Kupang, Indonesia which is just a dot on Apple Maps, but has a detailed map on OSM.

Apple uses crowd sourcing, but does it in stupid way. Google is the master of crowd sourcing, They make game Ingress and allow players to discover all kinds of routes to all kinds of destinations. And PhotoSphere allows people to make StreetView photos and share with people through Apple Maps. This is clear to see, 1 company is creative, the other is not.

Apple has been punking people since the last two years at least so I guess this is in some small way...poetic justice!

Listen Google maps might not be flawed as much but they're pretty bad too at times. I live in Pa and it says the university of Kansas State is a mile from here and businesses that don't exist here are up the street -_-'

That's true yesterday here n Vegas google maps told me to go west on paradise rd, which goes north and south. Luckily I kinda had an idea of where I was headed. No google maps is not perfect, but it is the best mobile maps app at the moment.

I don't know why, but the "apple should just give up" bit was f**king hilarious. It evokes the image of a kid who keeps tackling a task that's just beyond his capabilities, and fails, and just sighs, turns around, and goes home.

I am more reminded of a line by the great Rip Torn in Dodgeball: "It's like watching a bunch of retards try and hump a doorknob!"

I know I will sound crazy and mean but there shouldn't be any Map app for them until Apple beg Google to make it available for them, since Apple was one pulled it away and made big talks.

Its weird, cuz turn bu turn works great on my iphone 5 but the rest of the mapping system including flyover is really really bad.

Turn by turn can only work great if it has the correct destination. It may work all the way, but what good is that if it takes you to the wrong place?
