ALLTEL (NYSE:AT) wireless customers can soon download a variety of games and other services to their phones for use anytime with a new service available in all digital markets.
Beginning Friday, customers will be able to download games, e-mail, ring tones and picture-sharing applications. The games include some of the newest titles such as SEGA Snowboarding - a game exclusively available to ALLTEL customers.
"ALLTEL digital customers can now enhance the value and enjoyment of their wireless service with the ability to download games and other applications to their phone for use anytime," said Philip Junker, ALLTEL's executive vice president of marketing. "Introducing the color-screen handset and applications continues ALLTEL's tradition of connecting customers to the latest in communications technology."
The service is powered by QUALCOMM's Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless (BREW) platform. In addition, ALLTEL is introducing a new handset model, the Toshiba CDM9500, featuring a color screen compatible with the new service.
Content providers and applications available for the service include:

-- Games from EA Sports, Gameloft, Mobliss, JAMDAT Mobile, Sega Mobile and Thumbworks;
-- Forbes.com financial news and information from SmartServ;
-- Ring tones from Faith Inc. and Moviso;
-- Picture sharing and mobile greeting cards from Summus; and
-- E-mail access from Single Touch.

Customers need a BREW-enabled handset to access the service. Customers are charged for each application downloaded and the airtime required for downloading, about two or three minutes on average. Pricing for applications varies and includes options for a monthly subscription or a one-time charge for unlimited use.
