Apple iPad 3 is announced
There you go, folks! As expected, the latest and greatest iPad has just been officially announced by Mr Tim Cook himself. The newest iteration of Apple's iconic tablet is here to win your heart with its sleek looks, high resolution Retina Display, enhanced hardware, and broad catalogue of applications. And strangely, it is not called the iPad 3, or the iPad HD, but it is simply referred to as the new iPad.

So, what goodies does the new iPad bring? Well, to start, it now has a screen with the amazing resolution of 2048 by 1536 pixels - worthy of being called a Retina Display. After applying a little math skills, we get the amazing pixel density of 264ppi, meaning that fine text will look nice and sharp, while those HD movies will look better than ever. Also, the display delivers 44% better color saturation over its predecessor. No wonder Apple dares to call it the greatest mobile display to date.

But there is a huge improvement under the hood as well. The new iPad comes with an A5X processor (A5 on steroids, if you will), which now packs a quad-core graphics processing unit. According to Apple, the A5X processor offers "four times the performance" when compared to a Tegra 3 chip.

A camera upgrade was another thing that we were expecting to see, and sure enough, our expectations were met. The new iPad boasts an iSight camera, as Apple calls it, with a 5-megapixel back-illuminated sensor and a 5-element lens system. And in case you are wondering, yes, it can capture video at 1080p.

Oh, did we mention that the new iPad now has LTE? Yes, you read that correctly. Apple's latest and greatest tablet now rides on LTE airwaves and can reach peak download speeds of 73Mbps. Wow! Both Verizon and AT&T will be getting iPad models with LTE, an so will Canadian carriers Bell, Rogers, and Telus.

Fortunately, all these new features would not affect the iPad's solid battery life. Just like its predecessor, the new iPad will last for 10 hours on a single charge. And if you use 4G LTE, the battery should still last for 9 hours, which is a respectable figure indeed.

In terms of design, the new iPad does not seem to be much different from its predecessor. It even holds on to the hardware home button, which rumors claimed would be removed in favor of a capacitive one. As before, you can have it in either black or white.

So, planning on getting one already? If you prefer a non-LTE model, a 16-gig iPad will cost you $499. 32- and 64-gigabyte models will also be available for $599 and $699 respectively. But if you want to take advantage of 4G LTE, then we are looking at $629 for a 16-gig, $729 for a 32-gig, and $829 for a 64-gig model. Sorry, folks, no 128 gigabyte iPad just yet. The new iPad will be available for purchase in the U.S., Canada, the U. K., France, Germany, Switzerland, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Australia starting March 16, and if you desperately want one, pre-orders start as soon as today. 26 additional countries will follow suit on March 23.

Prices of the new iPad start at $499, U.S. availability scheduled for March 16

I guess they followed the notion that tabs aren't really bought for the camera aspect.

Do you still pay attention to the MegaPixels? If the optics used here are of a superior quality, this can easily outperform an 8mp.

This is almost the same as the processor race of 10+ years ago. Race for the highest clock speed!

MP has now taken a sideline to the individual parts of the camera to provide a better overall picture.

@Knicknevin
Yup. IMO 5MP is actually enough for occasional shots. Unless you're planning on blowing up your picture into life sized prints then 5MP is good. Also, I'm with you in saying better optics and processing over megapixels.

N95 still rocks in the cameraphone dept thanks largely to it's CarlZeiss optics and image processing.

are you really going to take pictures holding a tablet a lot? It doesnt really matter to me, what counts is the screen

I'd say the camera is going to be more impressive for the video capabilities. 1080p plus video editing is going to be huge for parents who video tape their kids games or school plays.

Holy Crap. It turned out to be a real heavy hitter.

To all droid manufacturers!!! Please produce a tab with specs at par or better than this! I want a droid version!!!!

Exactly. I think this is the first time my toothy fruity enemy Apple actually released a product that can really compete specs-wise. I used to think Apple always settles for the not-latest tech so they can easily upgrade their devices, iFans will buy either ways anyway.

BUT this "New iPad" really changed my view on Apple. Could it be the new management? Anyway, IMO Apple finally outed a device worth comparing to the best and the latest of competitor products. And it actually wins in some categories.

Agreed, they always seem to meet the bar never push it up higher. I hope Samsung creates a super amoled HD plus display on a 10 inch tab to blow theirs out of the water.

Apple has been essentially screwing with its consumer base for the past five years and no one has gotten wise to them.

Hats off to Apple for this.
I can't stand em, but I always give credit where it's due.
Samsung had a chance to put their best into a tablet and offer a true high tech to android at MWC but they dropped the ball monumentally.

If they expect from Galaxy pad 2 to compete with iPad HD, they deserve to be squashed by this school example of crafting a product with a single BANG feature, and presenting it to people.

Oh and btw, I think that Huawei media pad is better than this thanks to, of course, android, and even more powerful processor (A5x has the same GPU as the Sony Vita actually, and that's what apple is bragging with, not the GPU)

We all knew that this version of the iPad was coming so this doesnt surprise me. Apple had to make the iPad equipped with LTE and the processor to support

I know one thing..........people are going to camp out in front of Apple stores for hours or days for a device that didnt change much

Just to be clear I am not an Apple hater, I do like android more but i don't dislike Apple, now to my comment :D : now we wait and see what samsung has instored for us because I am rather sure that it will try and top iPad in every aspect possible, display, processor, and GPU(although i highly doubt that they will succeed in getting better GPU than this beast). :))) tally oh

Retina? Ok then my 2 ½ year old droid had a retina display too if you hold it far enough away. Apple's breaking even their own rules and gimmicks.

I still don't get the tablet craze. Like, can someone tell me what it is about tablets that are just so amazing.? I mean, I know that they're more portable than laptops, but I really don't see tablets as anything but over sized smartphones and can come with or without a carrier plan.

...and what does an Android tablet do different than an Android smart phone? not much. i'm not sure why only Apple gets flack for something every software maker is guilty of.

I'm not a tech saavy person so can some appease my ignorance...won't picture pixel density matter more seeing that it's more screen real estate? So why only 5mpx?

i say meh to both iPads & Android tablets...but if i had to choose one, it would be Apple's offering. in the midst of this "war of the software giants" what people fail to see is that Apple's advantage is that they are a hardware & software maker. Android, Blackberry, nor Windows are in this position. that is definitely a plus for Apple's camp. i'm sure they could add more RAM, higher res cameras, & all those techie peripherals but they realize that the population of those who don't care about that kinda stuff is vastly larger than those who do. Google is said to be the software for the people, but what Apple does is they bring their software down to the level of where people can connect with it. Google only appeals to a certain demographic, Apple appeals to ages 13-77. when it comes down to it, quad core processors...10GB of RAM...1TB of storage...who cares? does it do what i need it to do & does it do it in the most efficient way for me. these are the things that matter to average consumers, which are the bigger majority than the techie's. if iPads weren't selling at the ridiculous rate they are, nobody would have anything to say about them.

Huh? What drugs are you on to call it the greatest mobile display to date? Nothing beats Super Amoled + for colour saturation, deep natural blacks, and vibrant colours
