5 of the best MMO games for Android and iOS (2017)

Mobile MMO games have been gaining more and more traction the past few years, and for a good reason. The better hardware introduced in the last 5 years or so has really changed the possibilities for mobile developers, allowing them to create much bigger and far more ambitious projects.

In case you're not familiar with what an MMO is, however, let us explain. The acronym stands for “Massively Multiplayer Online”, and games of the genre share just one common trait – they place a huge number of players in the same shared universe. This means that everyone is playing in the same persistent world, and player interaction is a key element of the gameplay.

So, if you're looking for a solid MMO game to play on your Android or iOS smartphone, here are five of the best options out there.

Adventure Quest 3D

Price: Free (with IAP)
Developer: Artix Entertainment LLC
Download: Android | iOS

Adventure Quest 3D is among the more ambitious MMORPG games on mobile right now, but it seems to be doing pretty okay despite it. The game features a fantasy setting, like most others in the genre, complete with four different classes – Warrior, Mage, Rogue, and Guardian.

It also comes with pretty solid 3D graphics, complete with classic MMORPG gameplay elements. What caught us by surprise is that the game is also cross-platform, and you can play with users across all three available platforms (Android, iOS, and PC).

Adventure Quest 3D is currently in open beta, but it's still quite fun to play and feels rather polished.

Celtic Heroes

Price: Free (with IAP)
Developer: One Thumb Mobile
Download: Android | iOS

Celtic Heroes is another fantasy MMORPG game. However, it comes with a unique twist to its world. As the name suggests, the game features a heavy Celtic setting, which certainly provides a breath of fresh air to the genre. It also comes with quite detailed 3D graphics and pretty comfortable touch controls.

Players can select from five classes for their character. There are also player guilds, trading system, PvP battles, and whatnot.

Celtic Heroes is definitely one to try if you're looking for a new world to explore.

Dungeon Hunter 5

Price: Free (with IAP)
Developer: Gameloft
Download: Android | iOS

The Dungeon Hunter franchise is pretty popular in the mobile gaming world. However, in case you haven't heard of it, let us introduce you to one of the most popular hack'n'slash titles to ever hit smartphones.

Dungeon Hunter 5 is not an MMO game in the classic sense of the word. Instead, it relies on co-op and asynchronous multiplayer, akin to other mobile titles such as Clash of Clans. During the singleplayer campaign, you acquire different assets to place in your own dungeon for other players to raid. Your dungeon also includes an AI-controlled version of your own character, so if you've developed your base and character well enough, you might just fend off other players and protect your gold.

Other than that, the Dungeon Hunger 5 plays a lot like a classic hack'n'slash with polished graphics and pretty entertaining gameplay mechanics.

Vendetta Online

Price: Free with a level cap ($1 monthly subscription for full access)
Developer: Guild Software, Inc.
Download: Android | iOS

It's funny how mobile appears to be the perfect platform for two game genres to thrive, that can't do it anywhere else – casual games and space simulators. Vendetta Online is of the second kind – an MMO space sim with great graphics and fluid controls.

It was developed with the complexity of a PC game, and the developers made sure to state it in the store pages for it, too. This means that players shouldn't expect the game to be a cake walk, since there will be a lot of skill involved. The game even has two listing per app store – one with the full experience and one with simplified controls.

If you happen to like playing space shooters while on the move, Vendetta Online will be right up your alley.

Order & Chaos 2

Price: Free (with IAP)
Developer: Gameloft
Download: Android | iOS

We can't talk about mobile MMO games without mentioning the critically acclaimed Order & Chaos series. The game has served as an example on how to make mobile MMOs since its release, and the second game in the series managed to take everything the first did well, and build on top of it.

The game features an extremely immersive world and beautifully designed graphics, 5 races and 5 different classes to choose from, and all the necessities for a full fantasy MMO experience. If you're going to play one MMO on your smartphone, Order & Chaos 2 should be it.
