Best Cheap Windows Phone 8.1 Smartphone

david_zaqariashvili has owned it for less than year before publishing this review

if you want to buy a cheap windows phone 8.1 device and not a selfie addict, lumia 635 is a right choice. in my opinion this is a best WP 8.1 OS and hardware optimization. at least VGA front camera would be nice for skype video calls.

Budget phone, Nokia quality

nofanboy8 has owned it for more than one year before publishing this review

My issues don't lie with this budget phone per se as with decisions by Microsoft. Microsoft eliminated an app called Lumia Storage Check that provided the function to store maps for offline use on to the SD card. With no reasonable explanation the company built a brand new Here app for Android phones with the added function of supposed storage on SD. The reviewer below oddly reviewed the 635 harshly after it was already being cleared from store shelves to make way for its successor, the 640. I offered a more balanced review as I was waiting for a decent budget phone and purchased it upon it's immediate release in the U.S. and I was not displeased with the phone--it served it's function. I was happy with it.

Build quality
5.0
It's a sturdy phone. I dropped on a wooden floor on a few occasions and there was never damage. A very impressive responsiveness for the screen, I could actually select text that was so small the human eye could barely read it!
Reception
7.0
Very good call reception and 3g and 4g internet.
Call quality
7.0
Clear and pleasant.
Internet
7.0
The browser works great. Hotmail and Outlook are still a work in progress however.
Multimedia
7.0
YouTube could play videos consistently on 720p without buffering. Pages loaded pretty quickly.
Camera
5.0
The Nokia camera app arguably rivals anything offered by Google app-wise currently. It is dependable and fast. Although, storage of video would occasionally lag do to storage or processor, or ram
UI speed
7.0
Smooth and fluid and intuitive for learning very quickly. Customization and pinning work great, customization and having the option of live tiles is also very useful and enjoyable.
Everyday usage
7.0
Fun to use, light, pocketable, but slightly slippery cover. Battery needs recharge near end of day.
Text input
7.0
No issues.
Display
6.0
Ips lcd with offer of great brightness, contrast, and colorization. Vivid pictures are for higher end phones. This phone worked great for reading text. Overall I love the picture of this screen.
Battery
4.0
Battery could use improvement.

Pros

  • UI fun and fast
  • Internet browser is fast, pages load quickly
  • Video plays consistently well.
  • Good reasonable wifi reception.
  • Good call quality.
  • No issues with pretty demanding games.
  • Great podcast app.

Cons

  • Could use an upgrade for RAM
  • Needs more internal storage capacity
  • No offline map storage on SD
  • Music app needs improvement adding efficiency with folder and song organization

Lumia 635 behind

Centuries has owned it for less than 3 months before publishing this review

There are so many things that are behind, and for a $129 phone, I don't recommend you buying it at all. There are tons of cons, including a lack of proximity sensor, and more. If you really wanted to buy it, use the Lumia 640 because of better speed.
