Study shows that Samsung phones had the highest failure rate during Q1 2018
The latest "State of Mobile Device Repair & Security" report issued by data security company Blancco, covers the first quarter of this year. According to the research firm, from January through April, Samsung's phones had the highest failure rate among the manufacturers it tracks at 27.4%. At 22%, the Apple iPhone 6 had the highest malfunction rate among iOS devices, followed by the 16% failure rate for the Apple iPhone 6s. Overall, 15.2% of iOS devices failed during the first quarter of 2018 compared to 18.9% of Android models.

That the iPhone 6/6s should have double-digit failure rates shouldn't be surprising. In 2016, the touchscreens on a number of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s units stopped working, and a horizontal gray bar appeared. Dubbed "Touch Disease," the problem was apparently related to a decision made by Apple not to use an epoxy on the iPhone 6 circuit boards that it had always used in the past.

Apple also started throttling the processing speeds of the Apple iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus last year. Depleted batteries in some of these models could not provide the power needed by these phones to handle certain tasks, and that caused affected models to just shut down. Apple fessed up to using the update to iOS 10.2.1 to quietly install the throttling capabilities, and started offering discounted battery replacements as an apology.

While Samsung topped all manufacturers during Q1 with a 27.4% failure rate, Xiaomi was next among Android users with a 14.2% rate. Motorola was third after 9.6% of its devices failed in Q1.

The data was compiled by Blancco using iOS and Android devices handed over to Blancco from carriers and retailers for "testing and erasure." The information found that 74.3% of iOS devices are running iOS 11, while 52% of Android phones are powered by Android Nougat. The latter is one generation behind the most up-to-date Android Oreo build. Here is an amazing stat; nearly the same number of Android users have Oreo installed on their phone (1.3%) as the number running 2010's Android 2.3.x Gingerbread (1.2%)

The biggest performance problems for iOS devices, according to the report, was Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity.  That was followed by problems using a headset (like the absence of a 3.5mm jack) and mobile data. Android issues included problems with the overall performance of handsets, and troubles with the camera, microphone and battery charging. Alarming for Androids users and manufacturers, 34% of Android phones had issues with performance during the first quarter of 2018 compared to 10% during the same quarter of 2017.

Is anyone even gonna mention Pic#3 that literally shows iOS failing on average 48% vs Android 24% in the first quarter '18. Do you all see Asia's iOS failure rate! 87% like come on.

Quite a shame, really. You'd expect better from the face of Android. The only issue I myself have experienced is having to return my Note7...twice. But other than that mess, none of my Samsung devices have ever *failed*.

I know four people with the S8(+). All four of them have had problems with focussing and a blurry camera, and the fix was to hit the camera. This was actually a common problem. Besides that, two had the battery already being replaced, and the third one also doesn't last long anymore (dies within 6 hours).

There's one thing about my Note8 that bugs me. It isn't a performance issue, or even any sort of software issue....it doesn't bother me per say, but it appears as if light is bleeding from beneath the left-hand side where the front glass meets the metal frame. Not enough to even notice unless you intentionally put your face up to the phone and look for it, but there's definitely light shining through. Hasn't affected the phone at all since it's been in the water a hundred times and still works like day one...just a cosmetic defect maybe? I did Google it and see that a few others had the same thing happening.

Hm, that's weird as it doesn't use a backlight.. (like my G6, that also suffers from light bleeding).

Hm, seems to be caused by a gap between the frame and glass. Not that big of a deal if you ask me.

I thought only lcd had light bleeding. My G Pad has more than 10% of the screen covered

aegislash, The fourth paragraph is a little misleading in allowing the reader to think that Samsung units have a 27.4% failure rate. This is wrong. The graph that Alan provides actually suggests that of all the failed Android devices 27% of them were Samsung. Given that Samsung sells 300+ million phones per year this is exactly what you should expect. If we were able to compare the amount of devices sold per manufacturer vs the amount of reported failures as well, Samsung's quality rating could look much better than articles like this have lead most of the users commenting here to believe...

Samsung have many phones. Do they combined all the phones as 1 big failure. They split Apple 1 for 6 and the other for 6s. I don't get it.

Good observation. That study failed to mention the name of those models with failure rate for each manufacturer. Additionally, those Android smartphones model from say manufacturers have different updates depending of the carriers further twisting the results as posted on this report. When a study takes account those key factors, then we can discuss.

What I am reading its said 27.4% for Samsung. 22% for iPhone 6 and 16% for iPhone 6s you bone head. It would be nice if PhoneArena would break it down for Samsung as well then so we all know what to expect.

That's the wrong way to look at product failure rates, unless you are a fanatic trying to push some sort of agenda (we are going to leave that one alone). Every man made product is going to failed, the issue is what happened when such product failed. Does the manufacturer honor/stand behind their products, how easy/long did the manufacturer took to resolved the issue. How long did you have to go without the product etc... Those are the things I consider when I buy anything above $50.

Do you understand that even in a hypothetical case where Samsung and Apple had the same failure rate, Samsung would still be worse because android devices are a lot more than iOS ones? Wanna take some math lessons?
