AT&T announced on Tuesday that it has sold AT&T Mexico to Grupo Televisa and Fintech Holdings. AT&T will receive $2 billion in cash at closing, subject to certain adjustments, plus additional contractual and contingent benefits.
AT&T has plans to take the proceeds of the transaction and invest them in additional 5G wireless and fiber technology and capacity. The goal is to improve the strength of the AT&T network in the US.
The transaction will close next quarter, which is the first quarter of 2027. The carrier said that both consumer and enterprise subscribers will not experience any changes to their wireless service.
Now you must understand that the press release disseminated by AT&T is self-serving, which is why it says that the carrier has made "meaningful progress" with its strategy in the US where "customers increasingly choose AT&T for fast, reliable internet and wireless service."
By prioritizing its wireless and fiber networks, the carrier is preparing consumers, businesses, and communities for the advanced connectivity required for an AI-powered future. Meanwhile, since AT&T set up shop in Mexico, it has become one of the leading wireless providers in the country. To be more precise, based on market share, AT&T Mexico is second in the country after Telcel (América Móvil) with 16% of the market and approximately 24.7 million wireless subscribers.

The carrier feels good about the firms on the other side of the deal
AT&T feels good about the companies on the other side of the transaction, Grupo Televisa and Fintech Holdings, buying the business from the carrier. Both are in a good position to lead AT&T Mexico through its next growth period.
We have articulated a strong belief that the AI future will run on converged networks with dense fiber assets This move positions AT&T Mexico to participate in that evolution and is consistent with our long-term strategy to focus our capital allocation on opportunities for growth in the vibrant US market.

Grupo Televisa has a strong fixed-line broadband business, while Fintech brings fresh capital, knowledge of the local wireless markets, and the ability to run a wireless organization in Mexico. Until the deal does close, AT&T Mexico will be accounted for in quarterly reports as held-for-sale in continuing operations, which will be reflected in the Company’s third-quarter 2026 10-Q filing with the SEC.
