This could be the Sony Xperia XR

This could be the Sony Xperia XR
Not long after releasing the rather disappointing Xperia X series, and the lower-end Xperia E5 (which we actually liked), Sony is apparently getting ready to announce a brand new smartphone - its sixth in 2016. First seen as the Xperia F8331, the upcoming handset could be called Xperia XR once it hits the market. Until we get to know if this is indeed its official name, we can take a pretty good look at the new smartphone thanks to a set of renders unveiled today by @OnLeaks.

Reportedly, the new device measures roughly 146.4 x 71.9 x 8.1 mm, thus being a tad larger than the Xperia X and Xperia X Performance, and almost certainly sporting a display of around 5 inches (possibly 1080p). We don't really know a lot about the phone's features, but we can spot a USB Type-C port at the bottom, a front-facing camera, and a rear camera with dual LED flash. A previous rumor had it that both the rear and front cameras would let users shoot 4K video - something that no other phone is currently offering.

When it comes to design, the alleged Xperia XR distances itself from the Xperia X family, as it has sharper corners, plus an interesting compartmented rear shell.

Sony will host a press event on September 1 at IFA 2016 in Berlin, and it could officially unveil the Xperia XR on that day. Are you excited about this upcoming smartphone?

I think this XR device will undeliver for some reason... That design language makes me feel this phone will flop. But I hope it doesn't.

Too little too late? Will it be another AUD$999 phone? Sony really needs to pull their heads in and go back to AUD$699 like the Z1/Z2 and they'll sell heaps. I also think its time they ditched the big chin/forehead 1080p screens for something a little more mainstream like a 2k screen and minimalist bezels..

They did and it's called the Xperia xa ultra. It still has 1080p but I am fine with that, because the bezels are 99% gone!

Until then, I'll hold on to my z5 premium.

Gorgeous monolithic front and "Tube" cross sectional frame :D Weird segmented back with that antenna zone D: Glad Sony is moving to USB Type C (hopefully the connector satisfies the standards). Really hoping for a phablet version or I'm getting either the Note 7 or S7 Edge.

No joke, the phone is actually very beautiful, but that bezel is just a bit excessive. It would be nice if Sony were to design a Nexus though.... Some day maybe...

I don't understand Bezel-policing. LG G5 has the same screen to body ratio as a Moto Z even though the Moto has a front facing fpscanner. For me, anything above 70% is acceptable.

It's not even that bad considering the double front speakers. Take the Home button away on the Galaxy phones and we see the bottom bezel isn't that much smaller though it houses capacitive buttons (pick and choose what features you want, speakers or buttons). The Moto Z has a huge chin and they could have used capacitive buttons instead of on screen but the mics are there with the scanner plus it kinda grew on me so... Nah they could have gotten rid of the Moto logo.

I personally don't mind logos on the front. With that said, Sony has never impressed me with audio loudness, not from the jack and not from the speakers. All their phones have weak audio and that is unacceptable because Sony has had such a brilliant history with the Walkman phones and other audio related hardware. All that said, I think Sony's best phone since the they dropped Ericsson was the Z3. The screen was bright and white balance when adjusted produced some good results, as well as the excellent battery life. Since then it's been a downward trajectory. I'm hopeful for this device though. With a few decent price cuts on the X series and this as a flagship Sony may still stand another year or so. BTW at this thickness I'm hoping for at least a 3500 mAh battery to make it worthwhile. Motorola squeezed in a 3500 battery in a 7mm thick phone so at 8mm this should have at least that much even with an audio jack.

Eh, never cared for front logos from any company but some are tasteful in terms of font and size but the font used by Motorola is eh... At least it's sublte (not shiny) and somewhat darkened. Agreed on audio jack loudness but I thought the Z3, Z3v were as loud as my HTC One M8 but not as full and the Nexus 6p is a bit louder. Every Sony phone after that pretty much went a bit backwards in volume and quality. Of course Samsung needs to work on the audio output as well especially with the headphone jack but they're steadily improving.

Unfortunately they aren't even as loud as the Moto X 2014. M8 is way louder than almost any other phone (except the Axon7 maybe, and a few Meizu phones) provided you have decent headphones.

Sony makes decent phones but they have pretty poor marketing along with piss poor availability in other countries.

Now if this beauty was running Windows 10 insta buy. Then Sony could replace z tablet powered by Android with the x line powered by windows 10.

Sony can have partnership with sharp, release an international version of sharp aquos series then release a new flagship series next year aligning to that aquos design. Those aquos thin top bezels are really good for compact phones.

I am sure it has 68 % screen to body ratio lol While tho note7 is 78%

Not everyone wants a small bezel. My Note 5's small side bezels make it hard to use one handed, without a case.

Well, I think that people are interested in getting more screen size without the need to increase the size of the overall phone, which is something that is determined by the bezel size. I believe someday we'll see a zero bezel phone. It'll be several years off, but I think that's where we're moving towards. It's actually an extension of what Steve Jobs said regarding physical keyboards on phones, it's unnecessary space. Some people might like them, but for most, it's something people could do without.

Some will always be needed, I like a small top and bottom bezel, but I don't mind some side bezel. Handling my 6S Plus caseless is nice, and it's got some side bezel, but too much top and bottom for me.
