Sony will likely update the Xperia Z3 with Lollipop soon, firmware approved by the Wi-Fi Alliance

Most of the major manufacturers have already updated a portion of their more flagships and top-tier phones with Android 5.0 Lollipop (Samsung, LG, HTC, etc.), but you might've noticed the absence of another big industry name - Sony. The company has been keeping quite mum on the subject of updating its newer Xperia devices with this version of Android.

Fortunately for all those impatient users, it seems that the update for the Sony Xperia Z3 (D6603) is just 'round the corner. The firmware build in question has just been certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance, which is a sign that Sony is about to enter Lollipopland anytime now, mot probably by the end of February.

Meanwhile, the more MWC 2015 is getting closer, the lesser the chances of seeing the Sony Xperia Z4 in early March become. At this point, we generally think that Sony might have re-considered its 6-month release cycle and adopted a much more traditional flagship product release, which takes place once a year.

Actually I am not too excited about lollipop for my Z3c. My phone is working great and I will actually wait and see how this update fares for the rest, and then without any hurry I will update.

While I agree that the phone runs fine as it is. I use a Z3 dual and it runs great. But still, I want Lollipop.

The only thing that makes me want Lollipop is the external SD management in Kit Kat. It kills me that I cannot move files around with ES file explorer. I'm thinking a nice solution would be the recently discovered, root with locked bootloader, that would make the OS pretty much perfect.

YES that's the only thing bugging me. But the included file commander had permissions so it is a way around it. Still it sucks for third party apps

My Z3c doesn't have the file commander app nor any file manager with root permissions. I can delete content from the SD with the Sony apps (Walkman, Album, etc.) but still its a pain to remove the SD or connect to a computer to move or delete files not supported by those apps. D5803 with 23.0.A.2.93, haven't updated because I'm still deciding if I root with LB

That sucks, I got mine from New Zealand, D5833. I will definitely NOT root, because the camera is important to me and it will lower its quality doing so. But I feel your pain. File commander is usually one of the things I uninstall or disable when I get an Xperia, but this time around I left it when I found out about the limitaitons of KitKat... ES gives you the warning. It really is reason enough for wanting to update quickly.

Yes, I've seen some software versions include file commander while others don't. The root method I'm talking about works with locked bootloaders, which means you wouldn't lose the functionality related to the DRM keys that disappear when you root with the official method (unlocking the bootloader). Of course I'm not telling you to root, just wanted to clarify, I haven't decided myself. You can read about the tool for obtaining root with locked bootloader on XDA, just search for giefroot.

I'm just here so I won't get But seriously I could care less about the Lollipop update as I agree with you guys that the phone already works perfectly. Just give me the Camera2 API so I can finally use aways like Manual Camera please. We can't even download the app without it.:(

OEMs don't need to update as fast as phones running stock. Most of the Lollipop features like USB audio, stamina battery modes and SD card access (reimplemented) were there in

I really hope that they fix the WiFi hotspot and camera issues. When I try to turn on the hotspot, the options are grayed out when they should be available. Also, when I turn on the GoogleNow option to work on an screen, I get a message whenever I open the camera app saying it is being used and have to click ok. The camera issue is really annoying but the hotspot issue is huge because I can't use it at all! Do any of you have these same problems?

No problems at all with hotspot here. However I've also encountered some bugs related to the "OK Google" detection, the first one with the camera, which is solved by disabling the detection from any screen and another one with Nova Launcher and the FM radio app , it will stop playing sound if you have the OK Google detection enabled on the launcher home screen. I ended up disabling the hot word detection and when I want to do a voice query, just press the microphone button. I don't know if it is a bug on Google's side or on Sony's, but I would very much like this to be solved on lollipop.
