Sliding SMS (CM Messaging) is a quick replacement for Hangouts, brings your convos to the status bar

If you want to try a nice alternative to Google's Hangouts application, or the default messaging app that comes with your phone, Sliding SMS is worth a try.

It is actually the stock CyanogenMod M10 messaging app, with sliding conversational interface, that can be installed on any Android Kit Kat, Jelly Bean, and Ice Cream Sandwich phone.

It still features a sliding convo mode like Hangouts, and there is a pop-up reply function. You can also shoot a quick reply straight from the notification bar, mark the message as read there, or have an active notification icon. Sliding SMS allows you to hide the avatar of your contact, or present it as a circle image. There are various themes and message colors to choose from, and a bunch of new Android emoticons.

That's not all, though, as the clean, minimalistic interface loads without any lag or waiting, and the one-man team behind Sliding SMS is constantly updating or improving on it.

Take it for a spin from the download link below, if you are interested in a nice, clean and fast messaging app. Naturally, there is an option in its menus to set it as your default messaging program, too.

I use this app. It's awesome and the developer is on XDA all the time and updates the app frequently. Great stuff.

I don't mind hangouts but the only one feature I HATE is when you send and receive a message while the keyboard is still up, the messages go behind the keyboard and you can't see them. You either have to slide the page up or click the back button to hide the keyboard in order to read the sent and received messages. This should be automatic like every other messaging app does! I HATE this so much. Besides that, I think Google is doing an "OK" job with Hangouts.

When using gmail or the messaging app, I've noticed a glitch when pressing the menu key. Upon pressing the "menu key" and then "attach file" you will notice that the keyboard doesn't dissappear which means I'm unable to select the option required Pressing the back key to clear the keyboard brings me back to the beginning. It's only a minor issue but it is frustrating as my Galaxy Note 2 is my main means of communication, document production etc.
