Samsung hints at upcoming Gear smartwatch with circular display

Samsung appears to have confirmed rumors about it getting ready to launch a smartwatch with a circular display. A recent Samsung press release announced that the company plans to release the Software Development Kit for its next-gen smartwatch before the official unveiling of the wearable, a first for the company. What's interesting to note, however, is that the blog posts contains a teaser image of a smartwatch with a circular display. While this isn't exactly an official confirmation of the circular-display smartwatch, it's certainly a major hint in that direction.

The upcoming smartwatch will be the seventh in Samsung's Gear line-up. The device is said to be code-named Orbis internally, and may end up being branded as the Samsung Gear A. As most of the other smartwatches in the Samsung Gear family, the Gear A is said to make use of Tizen as the operating system, as Samsung is moving away from Android Wear as a smartwatch OS. The teaser image also mentions that Samsung is already working with developers such CNN, Yelp, Baidu, FidMe, and Apposter.

According to previous rumors, Samsung will launch two versions of the Gear A / Orbis. One is said to come with Bluetooth connectivity, while the more advanced version will come with 3G connectivity and the ability to place voice calls directly from the wristware. Some of the rumored features include a rotating dial that can cycle through open apps, a crown-shaped power button, as well as wireless charging capabilities.

Let's see if Samsung dares to pull a crazy one by trying to be Apple again by pricing this new Orbis smartwatch between $1,000 - $17,000 based on materials. This is what will happen when Samsung launches a $10,000 dollar watch. Day 1: Bought at retail price $10,000 Day 2: Sold at $1,000 2nd hand the next day. Lmao.

So you recognize that it is irrational for Apple to price their own smartwatch between $1,000 - $17,000 based on materials?

Samsung need to concentrate on getting big name apps on their watches such as whatsapp, Facebook and a decent version of ebay

Apps on a smartwatch are pointless. Why not just use a phone? The problem with smart watches at the moment is that there is no "killer feature" for the mass market to buy them.

if they want to do that much with app, they'll use smartphone since it have bigger screen and better interaction with user.. watches is used when u need to quickcheck of inbox, mail, instant massage, weather, traffic, and other stuff

Hopefully Samsung prices it appropriately. Would be interesting if it's under $250 with a large circular display.

LOL!!! 4th Gen watch? Lackluster sales performance. Something wrong with this picture. Samsung is desperate for a homerun, but hitting singles.

www.sammobile.com/2015/04/19/samsung-sits-atop-smartphone-market-share-in-q1-2015/ I am waiting for iPA to share these news, but as usual they ll wait till Sunday comes to post them. Until then, they ll use "reports and rumors" to show how the S6 has fell short by 100k units to meet the expectations lol

You are better off posting this: http://press.trendforce.com/node/view/1889.html That way it doesn't seem like you are only pro Samsung.

Exactly! Your sammobile news is more newsworthy than the other sammobile news! Your link is not a "report" and is not from a 3rd party source. http://www.sammobile.com/2015/04/22/galaxy-s6-has-reportedly-not-performed-up-to-samsungs-expectations-in-south-korea/ Also, highest market share = best correct?

Just because it is sammobile doesn't mean that they suck up to Samsung. Go check the website and you ll notice that they are always the 1st to report any flaws found in a Samsung device, just like they were the 1st to report the struggles Samsung faced by the end of 2014. They post the good and the bad.

@SuperAndroidEvo @Ninetysix PA already posted that news so why should he request to post it again ??! http://www.phonearena.com/news/Samsung-sells-200000-Galaxy-S6-and-S6-edge-units-in-South-Korea-falls-short-of-previous-estimates_id68543 think twice before posting comments just for hating

And i believe my initial comment did highlight the "struggle" Samsung is facing in S.K, but just like PA and everyone who dislikes Samsung on this site, you pick the kinda news that sounds like music to your ears and neglect the others, or just reading the click bait headlines and jumping over why the S6 has another 100k to meet Samsung expectations.

I'm an Android fan, have had several Sony and Samsung phones. But, none of the watches really interest me. Even the Apple Watch seems like too much. However, I'm considering a Pebble Time. I know it's not as classy looking, but something about it seems kinda charming, and more subtle. We'll see how reviews go, but I'm keeping me eye on it.

I am sure this will be a killer watch, but I hope they use high quality materials to design it.
