Report: More iOS than Android devices failed for the first time during the second quarter

Millions of smartphones that went through diagnostic testing in the second quarter are the basis for Blancco Technology Group's State of Mobile Device Performance and Health report, which was released today. The big headline here is that performance failures were spotted on 58% of iOS devices in the period. That is double the amount spotted in the first quarter. During the same time period, 35% of Android devices had a performance failure which means that for the first time in this history of the report, more iOS devices failed than Android devices.

The Apple iPhone 6 was the most failure prone of the iOS devices with 29% of them having issues. Next was the Apple iPhone 6s with a 23% failure rate. 14% of Apple iPhone 6s Plus units failed. On the Android side, among manufacturers Samsung led the way with 26% of Android failures discovered on a handset manufactured by the Korean company. Tied for second were two Chinese phone builders, Lenovo and LeTV. Motorola was third with 11%. The most failure prone Android handset was the Le 1S with a 10% rate. The Le 1S Eco was next with 7%. The following three models were from Lenovo as the Vibe K5 Plus (6%), Vibe P1m (4%) and the K3 Note (4%) rounded out the top five. Note that these are all low-end models.

65% of the iOS devices that experienced a problem in the second quarter had a problem with apps that crashed. 11% had Wi-Fi issues, 4% had a problem using a headset, 4% had an issue with mobile data and 2% had a bad receiver. Android users' leading issues were with the camera and with battery charging (10% each). The touchscreen was named in 7% of failures, while 5% were attributed to the microphone and the speakers.

According to the report, apps crashed on 50% of iOS devices that went through the diagnostic test in the second quarter, compared to 23% of Android devices. Snapchat was the app that crashed on the most iOS devices during the second quarter (17%), followed by Instagram (9%). 12% of Android devices experienced a crash using Google Play Services, which was the top app on the Android 'crash' list. Google Contacts sync, the Address Book, Photos and TouchWiz home all failed on 5% of the tested Android devices. In contrast to the iOS list, which was full of social media apps, not one of the latter appeared on the Android list of apps that failed.
