Qualcomm announces Snapdragon S4 "Pro" chip with Adreno 320 graphics

Qualcomm announces Snapdragon S4
Qualcomm has just confirmed the Snapdragon S4 “Pro” which adds amazing graphics with Adreno 320 graphical core, building on top of the powerful 28nm Qualcom MSM8960 with Krait processor.

The new S4 “Pro” chip patches the weakest spot of the first MSM8960 chips, which in the rush to the market only included Adreno 225 graphics. The new GPU will allow for higher resolution displays and bring a four-fold improvement in visuals. It will support the latest gaming engines from Unity (games on it include the Samurai series and Rocket Bunnies on iOS) and Epic (the Unreal Engine, powering titles like Gears of War).

Adreno 320 will support hardware acceleration of rendering features like instancing and multiple render targets, and come with new APIs with OpenCL.

The S4 “Pro” chip release date is set for the second half of 2012 and Qualcomm underlined that it is optimized for upcoming Windows 8 devices, supporting full hardware acceleration for the platform.

I guess they've learn their lesson. Good to see the GPU is improving fast. . .

Good and bad ... GPUs can be very power hungry. (The batteries for these things (tablets and phones) are getting bigger and bigger. Granted screens seem to be too ...)

or the Apple A6 that's going to be a tough act to follow when it comes to the gpu

A5 is beast when it comes to gpu power...but guess what...you know sony has deployed SGX543MP4 under the hood of PSP Vita...i wish they put it in their android line of phones/tablets.

told you the upcoming S4 chip was just a quick throw out to beat samsung and others to the market. the real chips dont come till Q4-12/Q1-13. Skip upcoming S4 phones or you will have buyers remorse when 4 months later they quadruple the GPU power to keep up with competition. its so hard being right all the time. :) :) :) j/k

Wow remixfa, remember that I said the Adreno 320 would be out on the second half of 2012. Qualcomm did announce the S4 Pro. So it turns out I was not 3 generations ahead. The Adreno 320 will have Xbox 360/PS3 graphics in your pocket. To me that is just insane amounts of POWER. Plus with the battery efficiency of 28nm tech. Qualcomm really has stepped it's game. They are going to give Samsung a run for its money. This is going to be great for us because now the phones are going to LITERALLY rival the power of laptops. By this time next year 2.0 to 2.5GHz quad-core powered phones WILL be the norm. To me it’s just really insane how the smart phone game has evolved in just 1 and a half short years. To me it all started with the HTC Evo. That phone was the phone who started pushing tech into this wave of innovation, ESPECIALLY in the Android game! It was so different & powerful for it’s time.

its still not rivaling the power of laptops. Again, I was using Qualcomm's own official roadmap which said Q1 13, so if they pushed that up, good for them. Xbox in your hand is phenomenal.. actually its almost unfathomable.. but its still not the power of a full laptop. your every day el-cheapo laptop/netbook, sure.. but u gotta remember, they are just talking about GPU power, not CPU and the Xbox is about 6 years or so old. PC's have gone far beyond that by now in both CPU and GPU. We are still a few years away from real convergence. But we sure have caught up pretty dang quickly.

Funny how they didn't need to change the CPU.

this should actually be better than the 4412 dual core, which is more or less the 4410 with a die shrink (which still nets it a 50% power increase and 50% battery decrease). It however will not be better than the 4xxx or 5xxx quad core exynos which are A15 and a much much bigger GPU.

you seem to have got some mixed up. Exynos 4412 is A9 quad core, not dual core. All Exynos 4xxx will be A9 based, so I don't think it will be better than this S4 Pro with adreno 320. but I agree the real match for S4 pro will be A15 based dual or quad Exynos 5xxx.

This should run with the dual core Cortex A15 Exynos', if Qualcomm decides to amp up the clock speeds.

it wont ... the S4 runs 30% higher than a A9. The exynos 4212 "A9" runs 50% faster than the exynos 4210 A9 that everyone loves in the SGS2. Thats not even concidering the A15 exynos which is supposed to make them all cry.

i think the adreno are better gpu's since they are based on radeon gpu's

too bad the real world doesnt agree with that in testing or theoretical horsepower.

Well thanks qualcomm...hope devs will be able to overclock 325 to new levels due to 28nm :)
