Nokia said to unveil first Android phones and tablets by end of 2016

The name Nokia brings nostalgic feelings in most phone aficionados and brings back memories of the quickest downfall of one of the world's best known brands ever.

After Microsoft purchased the company's phone business, it signed the deal on special terms: Nokia was not to use its brand for phones and other consumer devices until the last quarter of 2016. As that time approaches, Nokia has already made it official: it will be back in the phone business as soon as possible and its phones will run on Android. The devices that it will launch with the Nokia brand, however, won't be manufactured in the same plants, but instead it will be the recently-formed company HMD that acts as the new Nokia licensee and will acquire the responsibilities to manage the manufacturing of the upcoming devices.

Now, Chinese news outlet The Paper, has learned that Nokia China President Mike Wang has confirmed the upcoming launch of 3 or 4 new Nokia-branded Android devices in the fourth quarter of 2016. There will be both smartphones and tablets among these.

A sketchy rumor that had appeared earlier pointed out that Nokia is working on the launch of two high-end phones. The pair is said to run on the Snapdragon 820 system chip and the latest Android 7.0 Nougat. A metal body with dust resistance is also allegedly in the works, and the two phones will come in a small and large size.

Adding more fuel to the rumor fire, recently, Nokia veteran and ex-Rovio exec Pekka Rantala joined HMD as a chief marketing officer. All of this points to some serious intentions. Would you be interested in a Nokia-branded phone? What would make it special? Let us know your thoughts in the comments right below.

A popular brand name selling flagship phones under $400 could undo a lot of what Samsung has built over the last 5 years. Remember what happened to Nokia the first time. Samsung isn't immune.

Nokia doesn't have to beat samsung at all ... But it can very likely make it to the top 3rd position ... and that will be enough for the next 4-5 years... The only thing they have to do is just make sure not to make the same mistake as HTC , Sony and Blackberry have done ... Pricing it way too high !!.. all of these companies had a very good chance to actually rival samsung if they only had priced their phones cheaper than samsung... at 500-550 $ for flagship .. But Noooo they all thought very highly of them and priced their flagships at 700-800 $ just as much as what samsung costs... Now who would buy at those prices ? and hence their downfall What is special about Nokia ? Enormous Brand Power + relatively cheap price Nokia N1 tablet was a perfect test model !! Low price + great specs + brand power -- All round hit , sold out within minutes...

And this is without bringing any of the innovation to the table... Don't forget Strength of Camera's - Lumia 1020 and 808 Pureview Rumour is Nokia has been working on Graphene based smartphone Camera .. The R and D department of Nokia was never shutdown !!! Expect some serious Innovation once they can get hold of some market share and build their presence

They are not immune for sure. But Nokia faced lots of issues before Windows was even on the table, and they knew Samsung was a force they knew they couldn't win a battle with android vs Samsung years ago. Before Windows was chosen, android was brought up first. Tell me how all the giants before Samsung entered are doing now?

Like he said, there was a time people felt the same way about Nokia as you referred to Samsung. Just because they're on top now, doesn't mean it's a foregone conclusion. Any company, Samsung, Apple, Google, MS, can fail and fall to mediocrity. But for a company to take off, all it takes many times is just one thing. Look at what Android and iOS have accomplished in under a decade. Hell, look at what they accomplished in their 1st 5 years. And just as quickly, others can fall into obscurity in that same time.
