Mystery buyer of 1 million BlackBerry 10 units is revealed

Mystery buyer of 1 million BlackBerry 10 units is revealed
Earlier this month, BlackBerry got a short in the arm when it was announced that a mystery buyer had purchased 1 million units of BlackBerry 10 handsets. The exact breakdown of the purchase wasn't announced, although the QWERTY equipped BlackBerry Q10 isn't expected to arrive for another few weeks yet. At the time, Canadian based BlackBerry said that the purchase was the largest single order for BlackBerry devices in company history.

Fast forward to Monday, and we now know the identity of the buyer. According to perenially bearish investment firm Detwiler Fenton, the buyer of the 1 million BB10 units was wireless distributor Brightstar. The company supplies phones to a number of big names such as Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile USA, Virgin Mobile and TracFone Wireless. Verizon relies on the company to supply big box retailers and third party retailers and authorized re-sellers.

Everytime that Detwiler Fenton opens its mouth about BlackBerry, it has been to say a negative comment. Even back in December, the company issued a bearish report on BlackBerry (then called Research In Motion). Today, it continued this pattern when the firm's managing director, Marc Gerber, said that the use of Brightstar to make the purchase "...suggests Verizon doesn’t believe this will be a strong seller, since it normally tries to allocate hot product on its own."  We don't know if Detwiler Fenton is short BlackBerry shares (a bet that the stock is going to drop), but if they are, this would be a good example of what is called on Wall Street as "talking your position".

Regardless, the mystery is solved and regardless of who made the purchase, it still represents a risk-taking investment on someone's part. So when you look at it that way, someone still has the hots for BlackBerry 10.

Ah Brightstar, my company will be working with them and now we will be able to satisfy those customers that are interested in new blackberry's. Not a surprise that a huge order like that comes from Brightstar since they are the largest wireless distributer in the world dealing with companies like Wal-Mart, Costco, Best Buy, and in april Target.

Allan F is one very funny dude.. calling the purchase a risk-taking investment ...Dude is there any business you can do today thats risk free? Gimme me examples so I go ahead and invest in it...This just shows the hatred iphonearena/samsungarena have towards blackberry. ...This site is just a complete joke...Blackberry survived last year without a flagship device now the have two excellent devices...the z10 already out awaiting the Q10 next month so no matter what you and other brothers in crime sites ahem engadget and theverge say about blackberry you all will swallow it in the future. ..

How much did Samsung pay you guys to rename this site from iphonearena to now Samsungarena? When you guys reviewed the HTC ONE it wasn't made a must read news, but whenever I open this site S4 becomes a must read news...Ludicrous. .

People like you, who still say "the lag in android" have not kept up or even gone near an android device in the last 2 years. Get out from under your rock.

I would like BB10 to succeed. Android is not perfect in any sense, it is a big step forward to getting the perfect mobile OS. Introduction of new OS always bring something new to the table which eventually contributes to the overall user experience of all mobile platform. And i personally like the ability of computing some part of a process in different workstation of BB10 os, which i think is the future.

I agree BB10 is deff the future of mobile smart phones. Android and iphone has a lot of learning and catching up to do. no matter how great there specs are it still has plenty to be desired and lags

BB10 is and looks like Android wannabe! I find it quiet poor, no apps no games like WP8 app stores. The poor browsing experience and certain parts of core BB10 platform. Scrolling in the browser is choppy on l the pages: especially in landscape mode. There's also very noticeable lag throughout the platform ( no need for special social to see this, just drag a slider back and forth) while parts of the system are smooth, many are not, and this makes everything feel unpolished! The Z10 doesn't feel like a high-end handset, more like a midranger! Bought this had it for 2 days and then got my money back refunded,.

TROLL, BB10 is not bad, I've tried it before. I don't know why when I'm trying the Z10, it gives me a feeling that I want to buy it. Maybe because they have the same alphabet : Xperia "Z" ( my phone ) BB "Z"10

Rim Job (slang): An instance in which the tongue is rubbed in a circular motion around someone else's sphincter.
