LG straps the G4 to a drone. The result? A stunning video promo

The G4, LG's flagship smartphone for 2015, is already on the shelves and already proved that it's among the very best Android smartphones you can get right now. Being a flagship on such a competitive market means that the manufacturer has to come up with a number of innovative ways to promote and showcase the strengths of its product.

As a result of this, the newest promo video that LG just released aims to give us a better understanding of the G4's video-recording capabilities. Thus, a G4 unit got attached under a drone, which warranted for some pretty nifty footage that was used in the latest rather dramatic promo. Landscape shots and panoramic clips aplenty can be observed in the video right below.

Apart from the video-recording capabilities of the 16MP, 1/2.6" camera sensor in terms of quality, we also get to see what LG's improved OIS 2 technology is capable... and incapable of.

See, attaching a high-end smartphone to a drone is one way to draw attention to your product, but it could be a double-edged sword - in certain scenes, one can observe some slight, yet noticeable shaking (visible around the 1:00-minute mark). We wouldn't blame this on the G4's camera OIS, since the phone is not only attached to a stabilizing gimbal, but is also attached to a low-flying drone.

The issue here is the drone used. The DJI S1000 is prone to vibrations, infact its well known ever since the S800 was released a few years ago, and it still continues even with their latest drones. I would also have to say that the LG G4 is too light and easily absorbs the vibration from the drone frame... Therefore the vibration mounts are not working as good as they would with a 2kg DSLR.. These things are designed for DSLR's not light weight phones. I put a gopro H2-3D gimbal with Gopro Hero3 on my DJI S800 a while back, and experienced the exact same vibrations...

What are you talking about. This video looks pretty good to me. I notified a bit of shaking at the 1:00 like it was said above, but it definitely wasn't a deal breaker. Calling the camera performance a failure because of that small issue is a bit much don't you think?

lol just try iphone arena to do this test with an iphone or an S6 and you see the difference.. This is simply the best OIS i ever saw on a smartphone.

The vibrations are caused by the use of cmos instead of ccd. cmos cameras are used in almost every smartphone.

Fails to impress? The video was awesome and doesn't deserve that title. What a joke.

At 1:11 It is a bit shaky but it isn't that Noticable.

At around 1:00 there's very noticaeble optical distortion. Look closely at the boats.

Unfair criticism PA. Not a fail by any stretch. How the hell do you fly a drone that far away? It can go out of site and come back? I'm a drone idiot, sorry if it's simple. Explain this wizardry!

I think the title to this article is a 'fail', that's a beautiful footage from a phone cam, totally impressed.

1. That drone was sick 2. I did not see any shaking at the 1 min mark I went and looked 3. I thought the video was cool and camera performance looks solid.

thats was like almost nothing. Just try to do this with any other smartphone and you will see what shaking and optical distortion look like...

I'm not impressed, framerate seems to be pretty low, there's quite a lot of optical distortion.

Drone flying tests should be a standard test for testing the camera capabilities PA.

Yeah framerate wasn't amazing, but is on a drone. Seems to be that LG do have hell of a camera tho! I'd like a group test using this method?

They are filming in 4K that why the framrate was not that good ,, but g4 record better then the Gs6 and i think this was a good camera and the stabilisation was good
