Huawei Mate 20 Pro scores another big update focused on face unlock and camera optimizations
In addition to boosting its smartphone sales numbers during a time of industry stagnation and political tension, Huawei appears to have greatly improved its software support lately, doing a more than decent job of updating recent flagship devices to the newest Android version.
The company’s latest powerhouse, of course, launched running OS build 9.0 out the box a couple of months ago, which didn’t stop it from subsequently receiving several hefty software updates.
The first one was largely focused on security and camera improvements, followed by optimizations of both the Face unlock and fingerprint recognition systems on the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, and now basically a little bit of everything is rolling out, according to a fresh GSMArena report.
Tipping the scales at a reasonably hefty 482MB, the over-the-air goodie pack includes everything from Face unlock optimizations (again) to camera performance upgrades, bug fixes, and revised security patches.
The reason Huawei has repeatedly attempted to make facial authentication better on the Mate 20 Pro is the advanced technology behind the company’s implementation. This is a 3D method, similar to what Apple uses on its “notchy” new iPhones, but noticeably inferior in terms of accuracy and reliability.
It’s also definitely nice to see the already great triple rear-facing shooter arrangement get even better, at least on paper, with more “natural, authentic colors” promised for photos taken in Master AI mode, as well as fixes for a couple of especially annoying camera glitches preventing the app from launching in “certain scenarios” and causing “occasional discrepancies” between previews and actual snapshots.
Last but certainly not least, the 9.0.0.171 update integrates Google’s December 2018-released security patches, which is something all new high-end phones should try to do as soon as possible. Even those not officially available in the US like the Huawei Mate 20 Pro (we know, that makes us sad too).
