HTC's Dot View hits the Google Play Store for easier updates in the future

HTC's Dot View hits the Google Play Store for easier updates in the future
HTC has put up its Dot View app on the Google Play Store. The app supports the Dot View case for the new HTC One (M8). When the case is closed over the front of the phone, lights shine through the holes in the Dot View case to ape the look of an old-time LED display (think Lite Brite). By putting this on the Google Play Store, it makes it a lot easier for HTC One (M8) users to update it in the future. Let's say that HTC wants to update the Dot View case. Instead of waiting until it has enough changes to send out to warrant a full system update, the Taiwan manufacturer can simply update the app.

Listing system apps on the Google Play Store has been Motorola's MO lately with Active Display and Assist having their own apps to name a couple. Motorola has even updated those two apps already. But with the new HTC One (M8) having just launched, the Dot View app doesn't do anything differently than the phone does at this point. That includes being able to make or take calls with the cover on, receive email notifications, weather updates, time and date, and information about battery life.

HTC took the flip cover window, which has become increasingly popular amongst Android manufacturers for their top-shelf phones, and put its own stamp on the idea of receiving information from your phone while the cover is closed. Kudos to HTC for not just copying the others.

Cool but looks cheap. This will ruin the gorgeous looks of the M8.

F--- yeah man! Can't wait to see the "green arrow" vs deathstroke" fight. It's seems there's gonna be some kind of funeral scene in episode 21 which means that someone from "team arrow" is going to die. I just hope it's not Sara. But seriously, I can't wait to see Slade Wilson in that awesome deathstroke suit!

I hope Felicity doesn't die T_T .. I want to bang her brains out.... I feel like Thea is going to.. It's getting real intense! I'm surprised not a ton of people follow this show (as many people who follow Walking Dead or some other mainstream show)!

A lot of people on the internet say that felicity is hot. May I ask why? What is so hot about her?

@geordie oh that's why.... I still think Sara is the hottest of all women on the show, I mean look at her in the black canary costume. Her boobs are literally bursting from the costume. I really like "blondy" ! (the promise- slade calls her that)

Arrow is a series based on the DC Comics 'Green Arrow'. I watched the first season on Netflix, but maybe the 2nd is out on cable now? Oh...I also hope Felicity doesn't die, she is kinda hot, especially that episode where they did her up and put her hair down... mmhmm

So...putting it on the Play Store helps ensure faster updates....interesting. I just thought Motorola was doing it as being part of Google... Well....Android OEMs need to do this alot more.

I know, htc is putting a LOT of their Sense UI up on the Playstore very much like Google. This is a VERY good thing and think other OEMs should follow suit. Imagine if you could add or take off any single part of a UI or Skin and custom tailor it to your liking, there would be no need for a GPE device at all! :D

Google has been doing this for years, it's nothing new. It's good to see other companies doing it though. Google started doing this for the same reason. Instead of waiting for an Android update, Google updates each piece separately. This is why you often see updates for apps like Google keyboard, Google search, and everything else.

Case is cool and all that but why cover up a nice phone?

Many people are clumsy, they tend to break phones more often than maybe people like you who are more careful, then there are people who are scared of a tiny scratch that might occur on their phone, so thats why phone cases sell so well. Personally on my G2 I never had a case and it looks as new as when I bought it.

the screen remains on when notification is showing......my question is how much does it effects battery life?

There is even better question. WHY TH, IS THIS PATHETIC BUZZ about the "premium tin-can", when HTC One is MUST-HAVE-CASE-OBLIGATORY , device?? Making the brick even brickier:)

I like it. It's different and innovative.

Argree, but Samsung's View Cover Case is much , much better idea.

I agree to you that it is different and innovative but alcatel already have this on their Alcatel One Touch Hero, I think HTC just copied it in Alcatel's MagicFlip It is different from this dot view case but the idea is the same

There is no point in having this without an AMOLED

17. papss unregistered

I disagree.. My L1520 doesn't have AMOLED but has glance and it doesn't kill my battery or mess with the screen

But it did copy another phone's accessory! The Alcatel one touch!

This looks really similar to the Nokia Glance feature which was in the Nokia Black update some time ago. Just using dots for HTC.

Good idea. But it can not hold the candle to Samsung's View Cover.

Would have looked better, if had AMOLED OR OLED screen , IMO
