HTC U11's Edge Sense squeeze feature: useful or gimmick?

Today, HTC announced its 2017 flagship – the HTC U11. With a marketing campaign spearheaded by the slogan “Squeeze for the brilliant”, we had to wonder “What is this all about?”.

Turns out the U11 can sense when the user squeezes its metal frame and launch a pre-set app when that happens. There are two gestures – a quick squeeze or a squeeze hold. As for what gets launched – that’s up to the user. Additionally, the camera’s shutter can be activated with a squeeze, instead of pecking for the virtual shutter key. The feature is called Edge Sense.

But is this an actually useful feature, or just a gimmick, which would be forgotten as soon as the user sets their phone up for the first time? Well… what do you think?

HTC Edge Sense: useful or gimmick?

Absolute gimmick
I wouldn't knock it till I try it

It sounds like an alternative to Blackberry's keyboard shortcuts, which is really handy. Just without any permanent physical keyboard, which I much prefer. But still not enough to be a worthy upgrade to my OnePlus One, not without an active digitizer pen.

I chose the second option, mainly because I'm waiting to see how HTC will make use of this feature, as well as third party developers. If done correctly, it could prove to be a truly innovative movement in the world of tech.

There are 5 Phonearena rules to determine if something is a gimmick: 1. If Apple does it, it's not a gimmick. 2. If Apple doesn't do it, then it is a gimmick 3. If Apple does it after someone else, Apple waited for the technology to mature. But, it is no longer a gimmick. 4. If an app can do it, then it is a gimmick, unless it is an Apple feature (see portrait mode done by 10000 apps, Nuance, etc) 5. If there is no denying that the innovation is useful and Apple doesn't do it, then it's not a gimmick. But Steve Jobs was already thinking about 30 years ago, or there were rumors Apple would do it. 5A. If Tim Cook or Steve Jobs said something was useless, but Apple does it anyway, then screw it, rule 5 is superceded by rule 3 (see stylus and keyboard covers, and refrigerator-microwaves)

To me it all depends on what you can do with it.

I've been using a testing unit for a month now, and I couldn't go back to my previous device because of edge. I'm using the long press for voice recording, I love music and I'm always in meetings, and the edge option is wonderful, I can squeeze the phone when it's locked to start recording, people around doesn't notice it even, and don't get bothered with the phone light when in concert and the light is low... Simply amazing. The short squeeze for the camera is really helpful, I switch between it and Google now... You should try it to understand how helpful it is, it becomes part of the experience. On a side note: the gaming on this phone is the best I hope reviewers notice this. The camera is simply the best I've tried on any phone, and destroys all others in low light.

An option becomes a gimmick when you stop using it after a while, and you use it just to show it to friends. The camera option wasn't my thing, the audio recording was an excellent alternative for me, and I can't let go of it. Everyone of us might require sth and the edge sense just give us this option to access what we need immediately. I hope HTC opens it for developers and you can see how helpful it will be.

It could be useful. Think about it, instead of adding a dedicated button to the device.. the whole freaking phone can be one! Just wondering how it will react to being in a tight pocket.

It might be usefull but you have to want to use it to start using it everyday like Apple's 3D Touch or Edge UX

Seems like something that will fail after a fall and how about cases? My case for one is a clear bendable plastic but the sides are extremely stiff sooo.

Being able to turn on the flash in the freezing cold in the dark sounds quite useful.

I don't think I will use it. Looked pretty awkward during the presentation especially during the voice parts. I use a case too so not sure if you can jack up the sensitivity enough to use it with a case.

I had the S7 Edge and i never recall that i used the Edge UX once in my life !! Actually those Edges are irritating but since its made by Samsung, it is not a gimmick :D Give me a break .. This feature could be useful. Lets try and see how useful it is ..

It's not a gimmick because the edge was just for ergonomics, immersiveness, and style. It was never marketed as a game changing way to interact with your apps like this is being marketed.

Its not a great idea to take photos at least. When you squeeze a phone even lightly phone moves from its intended position unless the pressure from both sides of the phone is same and also applied at same time.. ouch

With my Nexus 5x I never use the power button. With a short press to mute and long press to increase volume I wouldn't need the volume rocker. A future phone could eliminate those buttons entirely (although you'd need a pinhole reset).
