Google's Live Translate mode made learning languages obsolete. It's one of the best features of Google Translate, and now it got an important update, especially for iOS users. You can now use your iPhone in "listening mode" to get live translation without the need of earbuds.
Google brings Live Translate "listening mode" to iPhone users
Google first launched "listening mode" this summer for Android users, letting people use the Live Translate without headphones.
You just hold your phone next to your ear and get the translation through the speakerphone. Now, this feature is no longer Android-exclusive, and iOS users can enjoy it as well.
Google Translate’s live translate brings natural, near-real time audio translations to 70+ languages. Today, we're introducing two updates to make translations even more seamless.

It's especially helpful if you've forgotten your earbuds and need quick info from a local during your Columbian journey. Or if you need to book a room in a hotel in France but your French is… Let's say suboptimal (French people just refuse to speak English for some reason).
How often do you use Google Translate?

Live Translate now runs in the background

Even more helpful is the second new feature Google is bringing to Android and hopefully to iOS later on (this one is Android-exclusive at the moment). Live Translate can now work in the background.

This is extremely helpful in the aforementioned situations where you need to pull up a map on your phone's screen and keep the conversation going or show your booking info at that French hotel.
With this new feature you can switch between apps all you want while keeping Live Translate active.
Google posted the news on its official blog back on September 4, with no rollout schedule. This means both features should be live for Android and iOS users worldwide.
How often do you use Google Translate, and has it breached language barriers for you? I know it was a lifesaver during my trip to Osaka, Japan, as my Japanese is on a beer-ordering level.
