Galaxy A8s is the first phone with Infinity-O design, hole-in-display tech houses 24MP selfie camera
And so it begins. The hole-in-display era, that is. Samsung introduced the Infinity-O display as a twinkle in its designer team's eyes not long ago, but, lo and behold, we present you the Galaxy A8s

While inconspicuously named, this is the first handset announced with a front camera pierced directly into the display, the so-called Hole-in-Active-Area technology.

Galaxy A8s design

Needless to say, that means very slim top bezel, and similarly anorexic side frame, with just the chin of the A8s reminding us of the phones of yesteryear. The shaved-off topper can only be achieved by moving the front camera somewhere else, and that different place is a hole in the top left of the display itself or the so-called Infinity-O concept.

The midrange Galaxy A8s has its notification and other icons appearing towards the middle of the status bar, freeing up space on the left... for the selfie camera hole in the pierced display itself.

There should be other interface shenanigans Samsung may have employed to achieve its Infinity-O display design and we would be curious to test how such a concept behave while watching videos, for example.

Galaxy A8s specs

Apart from the unique design, the A8s is no slouch when it comes to its specs, too, with 6GB/8GB RAM options and 128GB storage. The funny part is that nowhere is a Super AMOLED technology mentioned for the 6.4" display, so we'd have to assume that it is indeed an LCD panel, as rumored. For those curious about the resolution resulting from this hole-in-display design, it is 1080 x 2340 pixels, still amounting to 19.5:9 aspect ratio.

There is a triple camera on the back with a 24MP main sensor that is paired with f/1.7 aperture lens and a 10MP telephoto camera for 2x "optical" zoom. The third, 5MP sensor with f/2.2 aperture lens, is for depth-sensing duties. while the front-facing camera is a hearty 24MP sensor with f/2.0 aperture.

The obligatory fingerprint scanner on the back is situated far away from the camera area, thankfully, and Samsung has backed up all the A8s jazz with a 3,400 mAh battery pack. As can be expected from a 2018 Samsung midranger, it comes with Android 8.1 Oreo on board with Samsung's Experience 9 UI pairing.

Galaxy A8s price and release date

As a China-only model, for now, the A8s can be pre-ordered there starting 12/12, and will be released after 12/21 when the pre-order window runs out. It comes in Blue, Gray and Green colors in the trendy gradient hues.

Mum's the word on the exact pricing, or if and when the first phone with a selfie camera hole in the display will have a more global version, but there is not much more to wait before it all becomes clearer.

So they made fun of the notch all the time and yet they market this "distracting hole in a random place in the display" as a feature? Call me old-fashioned, but I still prefer small symmetrical bezels to house the camera and the sensors.

Exactly!!! Unless we get all screen with no stupid notch/cutouts, I'm good with the slim bezels that Samsung has currently.

I think you never heard about crying people that said S8 and S8 or Note 8 and Note 9 are the same design. This is something new. Think about an S10 looking similar with S8 and S9. It is you that are ok with 3 yrs. old same design.

Of ot was random, it wouldn't be in corner where it is less visible. You aren't buying it and not can you as it's a China release for now. Stick with your hideous look Xperias which haven't changed in 10 years. Nor have they been selling very well for that time either. I don't see where they say it's a feature. And yes I would also prefer bezels. Any obstruction to the screen is completely stupid. But this is still way better than the notch. The hole is bad, but it's far an away smaller. Smaller is better in this case.

I haven't bought an Xperia phone since the Z5. And if Samsung didn't remove the FM Radio, I'm pretty sure that I would have bought the Note9. Why is it so hard for people here to understand that different people have different needs/preferences and that this a forum to discuss it. And I just find it Ironic that they made fun of the notch and yet they also put something distracting within the display, even though I think a camera hole is better than a complete notch. Edit: So , you're agreeing with me that tiny bezels are better than a notch, and yet you're criticizing me? Only because you think that I use Xperia's? Your comment litteraly makes no sense

Samsung phones have FM radio. You have to install an app and plug in headphones for the antenna. All Samsung phones have FM. In some models the chip may not be activated. But if you live in US, all Samsung phones have FM. I use NextRadio. Works perfect. You look just attached headphones tonite because eit is the antenna. Again you guys continue to talk about Samsung phkmwa, and everytime to claim it doesn't have something you end up being wrong. Do sole research. The internet OS accessible by whatever phone you have. If you simply Google FM radio on Samaung phones, you would know how to make it work. USA phones all have working FM. Unless you have an older iPhone. Like older than than the X. So what they made fun of the notch. Apple has poked fun at big phones, the stylus and more. What are they doing now? So what they made fun of it. Because uts stupid. The hole sucka too. But it's far better than an inch wide notch, taking up for more screen. What needs so a phone have that what you are talking about won't work? FM radio? Does work. You just don't know how to get it working and as I said there is no excuse for it when you can just search. You guys who live to troll Samsung for everything. Why don't you mock Apple for all the stuff they've mocked Samsung for and now copy. Peek and Poke was a copy of Sansung S4 where you could hover and get similar results. Many launchers offer same features too. There are at least 10 things Apple has mocked Samajng doe doing, and are now doing them. I don't think you use an Xperia. I simply used your name. Plus I've seen you commit on the Xperia many times and how you try to make them sound better than iPhone or Galaxy and all xperias suck at everything.

For ffs, stop getting butthurt over every comment that's critical about anything related to Samsung! He might have the username Xperia, but maybe, and just maybe, if you weren't such an annoying fanboy, you would've known by now that he could care less about what brand is making what phone, he is interested in what an X phone is capable of doing, that's why in recent years he had phones from different manufacturers, that's why he always complemented recent Samsung, Huawei, LG and everg major flagship. And why are you even asking him to criticize Apple for you to accept his criticism of Samsung? Lol But again, if you weren't such a blind fanboy, you would have seen the dozens of posts of him criticizing Apple, also while appreciating the good stuff in their products. You did the same to me during the whole Note 7 fiasco, I was super fan of Samsung phones, yet you came after me for criticizing Samsung for the way they handled the case in the 1st few weeks when the issue was discovered, questioned the legitimately of me having the phone, then going after me and my family with your insults when I posted a picture of my Note 7 back then. You seriously need to grow the F up, not everyone is brainwashed into loving a specific brand, we can appreciate their products, but definitely not all of them. P.s: not everyone who criticizes your God Samsung is an Apple fanboy, so stop bringing them into every argument that is about Samsung.

You're not old fashioned bro, you just have the common sense that majority of people here lacks. If the hole isn't this bad, then why did Samsung Photoshop it to look smaller than it is in the official pictures? Just check the pictures above and notice how bigger it is when compared to the official pictures. Samsung should have stuck with their design, it was appreciated by everyone but their haters, even tech reviewers who are fans of Apple used to pick Samsung's design language when they compare their phones. You know what else is bothering me, why are they copying the iPhone X's camera design? I expect this from Huawei, Xiaomi, and most Chinese OEMs, but I drfi didn't expect this from Samsung who have been setting trends for the past few years instead of copying Apple.

You're not old fashioned at all, both the notch and the hole are both intrusive and ridiculous.

It has "everything": a chin, a small forehead, a hole, a rear fingerprint sensor, an average battery size and no OIS. Not sure who will buy this, but not me.

a chin: Yes, it gives better aesthetics. a hole: The hole is something way better than notch. a rear fingerprint sensor:A rear fingerprint is the best placement for a sensor an average battery size: Hello, there is a 10nm Chip and it's 30%-40% more efficient. no OIS: I dont't no,it was better to have it but the EOS will make the same job. Also there is a emerald green color option! So yes a lot of people will choose it!

It's a mid ranger aimed for China using internals from 3rd party manufacturers. I'm sure they will reserve the best design for the S10. Hopefully minus the pill cutout

How is having an opinion on what I prefer in a phone design, related to me sounding important? Is English your 2nd language or something?

PA, did you even Google the specs of the phone? Because your article reads as if you are totally uncertain about the specs. Yes it is indeed an LCD display. Not only is the main sensor on the rear 24MP, so is the front camera. The battery is slightly smaller than the one in the S7 edge at 3400MaH. Considering it's only an FHD+ display. That should be enough. Still bigger than ALL the iPhone batteries. Considering the screen size is 6.4". And it's available in Green. Though I don't know what shade. Am sure the cans will have OIS. The final specs have yet to be release. Just because it's not me toned, doesn't mean it won't have it. You know if it's not mentioned for the iPhone, it surely won't have it and that is what you all are so use too. Even if it doesn't, at 1.7 aperture, they will take better pictures than most phones. No headphone Jack. (Stupid move). At least Samsung didn't cheap out of specs for this phone like Apple. I'm guessing $699-$799USD.

The A-s series is meant to be their cheaper midrangers aimed at China using BOE parts, I imagine the price could be lower, maybe around the $400-$600, anything over would be crossing S line prices

Apps usually have menu buttons and elements there. How would developers work around this.

Just like the notch on Android phones, and since we are talking about a taller than usu4 aspect ratio, the area alongside the hole will only be used for the notifications bar.

41. worldpeace

Posts: 3135; Member since: Apr 15, 2016

Nope, that's where the notification bar is located, menu button will appear below notification bar as usual. But it might interfere with fullscreen games of video streamer/player.

Would never buy a new phone with a huge dead pixel. Why not just put a small display on the back and remove the front camera altogether?

I actually like this best. But make the small screen look like it's not there when it's off like the nubia x.
