Underwater photographer takes the Sony Xperia Z1S for a dive among manatees
The smartphone’s IP58 certification allows users to take it 5 feet underwater - and that’s exactly what Florida-based photographer Carol Grant did recently. She used an Xperia Z1S for a photo session of unusual models: Florida manatees, which are among the world’s largest freshwater mammals.
Carol Grant says about the Xperia Z1S that it's "easy to hold while snorkeling. In addition, the long battery life is a definite plus."
The Z1S’ camera performed pretty well underwater, as you can see for yourself in the gallery below. According to Sony, all the images are “completely unedited”, “taken straight from the Xperia Z1S shooting in Intelligent Auto mode.” Obviously, when viewed in full size, the photos lose a lot of detail, and noise is visible in some areas. Still, being able to take photos underwater with your high-end smartphone is something!

wait what? the xperia z1 is not the only mobile that's water proof, there's also the xperia z1s and the galaxy s4 active, all in all the z1s comes on top though imo

Do not think you would be happy with the Actives responses. It has been shown to be more water resistent as opposed to water proof.

Trust me the galaxy note 2 was the last Sammy phone I'll ever own

how do u plan to take picture in water? the touch screen doesnt work in water.. :p
Z1 has a camera button just for this reason :D

Or, you know, you could set up the volume key as a camera button.
22. raunak (Posts: 490; Member since: 12 Oct 2011)
That would be stupid. Dedicated camera buttons are two stage keys so you can look at the object before you snap photo. Volume key won't work well, since you cannot touch the screen to focus and volume key will only focus in center.

I was merely responding to the point he/she was trying to make about not being able to actually snap a pic. I like samsung but i am no fanboy.
clearly the s4 active (and the regular s4 imo) is outclassed by the Z1S. Its a beautiful fone and that camera is superb. But i was just trying to respond to his/her comment about not being able to snap a pic.
31. Bernoulli (Posts: 1396; Member since: 01 Sep 2012)
Okay that is true on lumia phones, as I own a lumia 1020, but back when I had an android it just went for the pictures, no focus adjustments like on lumia
24. yudi.nemesis (Posts: 1127; Member since: 14 Mar 2013)
if i'm not mistaken S4 Active will be fixed focus camera when you turn on Aqua mode.
33. Bernoulli (Posts: 1396; Member since: 01 Sep 2012)
So does the z1s but you can set the volume keys for the camera shot on the xperia z

There is no other phones can compete with Z1/Z1s/Z1C when in comes to underwater photography.
3. MojoDojo (Posts: 79; Member since: 11 Jul 2013)
Thats impressive. The function as well, not only the camera.
4. r0ndy (Posts: 5; Member since: 30 Dec 2013)
thats almost a selling point alone. that it was done with someones phones rather than a 200$ waterproof camera thats seperate.
6. mokhtar (Posts: 134; Member since: 06 Jan 2014)

In your opinion and yeah, the Samsung S4 Active can! So can the Kyocera Torque, Casio G'Zone Commando and most of the japanese smartphones.
15. james004 (Posts: 440; Member since: 15 May 2013)
nope S4 active doesnt have camera button. if you have z1 and actually used phone inside water you would know that touch screen dont work inside water. not of iphone, not of samsung, not of nokia, not of sony. no touch screen works inside water thus u need camera button which sony z1 has. means your s4 active can take video only inside water that is even if u start it before entering water.

Z1's speaker sucks , that's the only downside
18. yudi.nemesis (Posts: 1127; Member since: 14 Mar 2013)
Sorry but i'm not agree with you Z1 may not have the best speakers, but the speakers is good enough for notification, music and video playback.
21. __0__ (Posts: 187; Member since: 07 Jan 2014)
I wanted a Z1 , but compared to a note 3 I eventually spend my hard earn money on the speakers kinda sucks
23. yudi.nemesis (Posts: 1127; Member since: 14 Mar 2013)
I just do not agree when you say Z1 speakers is sucks because in the video you can clearly hear that Z1 speaker is pretty good.
Everyone has different standards in choosing a smartphone they would buy, but if the speakers are the most important things I would not pick the note 3.
Note 3 is a very good oversized phone but from my real life hands on note 3 is not comfortable in the pocket, not easy to use with one hand and feels cheap just like my GS2 (Nokia E6-00 made me fall in love with a phone made of metal because it feels and looks much more premium even with dents and scratches).
For me cutting edge specs, comfortable in the pocket,
easy to use with one hand, durability, premium feel and look is the most important thing. that's why I prefer to Z1Compact compared to other phones.

And i just do not agree when you say the Note 3 feels cheap.
My Note 3 feels very nice. I've used my friends Z and it does feel better but not enough to make my Note feel cheap in any sense of the word.
Only thing i dislike about Sony's flagships are the huge(imo) bezels up top and on the bottom.
Also, i greatly dislike on screen buttons.
But to each his/her own.
34. yudi.nemesis (Posts: 1127; Member since: 14 Mar 2013)
I got no problem if for you note 3 feels very nice, but
based on my "real life" experience note 3 feels cheap for a high end phone.
Just try using Z1, iPhone or HTC One for a week you'll know why I can say that the "metal" phone feels much more premium.
For me the size of the bezels is very reasonable because usualy waterproof phones are bigger and thicker than normal phones, they can make it smaller but it will be thicker like sharp mini and Xperia UL.
And from the latest screen ratio comparison sony waterproof flagships is not the worst when it comes to bezels, even my Z1 Compact with large battery, camera sensor and IP58 certification has better screen ratio than my GS2.
Until this day there is no samsung phones can beat Xperia ZL screen ratio, and Xperia Z has smaller bezels than S4 Active.
One last thing from my experience with those bezels i can have more better and secure grip in landscape mode especialy when taking picture with one hand.
Screen ratio comparison :

Well i have an iPad Mini. So i know what you mean by build quality.
Sony, Apple, and HTC have that department covered (i almost went for the HTC One Max since i love phablets but i chose the Note 3 for the Multiwindow feature)
But i will never carry a fone naked. I will always put a case on it. (My old HTC Titan, GS2, N2, and currently N3) so i will always choose functionality(i use this term loosely since everyone has different needs) over design. After all, you cant feel metal through plastic lol
Also, the GS2 is quite old so you cant really compare it to your Z1 Compact.
About the bezels, i always snap pics or take videos while holding on to the sides of my fones so the less bezels there are the more i like.
But choice is good :) so lets just enjoy our fones
36. yudi.nemesis (Posts: 1127; Member since: 14 Mar 2013)
Yeah i know GS2 is quite old but i think Z1 Compact is a great engineering achievement because Sony can put Large image sensor, big battery and higher IP certification in smaller and thinner body than Xperia Acro S and Xperia V.
And if you do some bezels comparison between Sony and Samsung waterproof phones you will find out that Sony phones has smaller bezels.
I know you can take picture and video with one hand by holding or "pinch" on to the sides of the phone.
But with the combination of reasonable size bezels and camera shutter key you will have much better and secure grip.
I prefer something useful and fuctional than just some cosmetics.
Choice will always be a good things for all of us.

S3> HTC 8S> Nexus 4> Nexus 7 and Xperia Z1.
I have personally used all these phones from 3-6 months and i know all them very well.
Comparing Z1 speakers to say samsung. the difference is:
Samsung is louder but has very high pinch noise.
Sony is lower but sounds like its amplified to sound clear. so it doesnt make weird sound when bass comes up or when someone screams in audio being played.
if you want loud but distored sound, go with samsung. if you want clear but low sound go with sony.

I have a Xperia ZL too. Which I like a lot.
Speaker is fine , better than Z1 , bezels are super small too

Well how flippin' sweet is that? Sea Cows are so cool to see in the wild here in Florida. I just wish boaters would be more aware of them ...
Holy wow nice pics :-p

Excellent underwater results.
And Manatees are cool....
