Reports recently came in about two new Huawei Pura phones in development, one of which is a successor to the Huawei Pura X and the other an entirely new model. The company plans to use the latter to compete with the upcoming foldable iPhone and Galaxy Z Wide Fold, and new renders show just how similar it looks to the competition.

Huawei Pura wide-fold design

According to a new leak (translated source), this is what the Huawei Pura wide-fold phone will look like. Unlike the Pura X and very much like Apple’s upcoming foldable, the phone will unfold horizontally.

In addition, the recognizable camera layout can also be seen on the rear, which is accurate to another recent leak that revealed what Huawei’s new model was going to look like.

Similarities to the foldable iPhone

As seen in a fan-made render based on the sketch, the Pura X looks very similar to leaked designs of the foldable iPhone. The aspect ratios of the displays are almost identical and so is the camera island on the rear.

Apple’s foldable will feature only two cameras according to current reports, however, and the punch-hole selfie camera will expand into a Dynamic Island during active use. Leaked renders of the Galaxy Z Wide Fold show that Samsung’s phone will at least look different from the foldable iPhone, aside from the aspect ratios, understandably.

An emerging category of foldables

All three of these wide-folding phones represent a new emerging category of foldable flagships. Apple, Samsung, and Huawei are all betting on this form factor taking off, and none of them wants to be a latecomer to something that might become popular.

There is a chance that these foldable phones won’t take off. In addition, there is also the possibility that they become just popular enough that we will start seeing annual releases alongside more traditional foldables.

I’m all for new things

When the designs for the foldable iPhone first leaked, I couldn’t help but wonder who would ever buy such a phone. Now that more and more renders and details are coming out, I’m coming around to the idea of at least giving these phones a fair chance.

Whether this form factor takes off or not, however, it’s always good to see something that spurs phone manufacturers into action to stay competitive.
