iPhone sales could reach 200 million over the next year

iPhone sales could reach 200 million over the next year
Despite Apple’s mixed results at the company’s earnings call last week (record profit, yet missed targets), and dramatic shift with its board of directors, the iPhone 5 is forecast to set new sales records for fiscal year 2013 which has just begun.

The iPhone 5 has already had a stellar sales debut, with more than 5 million sold during the first weekend. For what was left of the financial quarter, an additional 27 million iPhones were sold. Michael Walkley, an analyst with Canaccord Genuity, believes that Apple will move 194 million handsets for this fiscal year, achieving quarterly sales goals that will shatter last year’s sales. The holiday quarter of 2011 was Apple’s strongest period, selling 37 million iPhones. For FY2013, sales are expected to reach 48.5 million.

In comparison, Samsung will likely move over 300 million handsets, but take into account that Samsung manufacturers a wide array of products whereas, Apple essentially makes one, plus a lower volume of legacy iPhones. iPad sales will be helped by the new iPad mini, with overall sales possibly topping 100 million units in the coming year.

Between the two giants, they are squaring off in a market by selling multiple-millions of devices each day around the world. That is not too bad for a day’s work.

how can apple achieve that when stores in hong kong and canada all have run out of stocks? i wonder if people are willing to wait for more than a month. anyway, just think if apple were able to supply all those who have ordered the IP5, i think it would be more than 200 million units sold if only they could improve their production,

"...if only they could improve their production." Best example of cutting their nose off to spite their face. Apple got pissy with Sammy and decided to cut back the quantity of iP5 display panels they purchased from Sammy. Guess what? Apple's other display manufacturing partners couldn't scale production fast enough. No display panels = no iP5s built, which = no iP5 sales. I wonder if Scott Forestall inserted himself into the decision to bail on purchasing display panels from Sammy before adequate alternative supply production could be ramped up? It certainly as all of the hallmarks.

Scot forstall is the guy most directly responsible for the iOS interface, and lack of evolution of that interface leaves and that's a bad thing? There can be no silver lining to that? Tell me why please?

I wasn't defending Forestall. I was commenting that Forestall was probably guilty of leading the charge to bail on using Sammy as a supplier. Which lead to supply constraints as other suppliers can't open the spigot like Sammy can. Net-net, I see Forestall's departure as a positive development for Apple. The iOS UI is soo dated. Maybe now work an start on an updated UI.

the key words here are "could reach" but will never reach. After the iphone 5 debacle, the ipad mini debacle, the ipad 4 debacle (basically the same old new ipad...very confusing!) and Forstall leaving debacle I doubt Apple will go anywhere from here but down!

Your thinking is based too much on your hatred of apple dude...it really is. Apples has already sold 26.9 million iPhone 5's and counting. Post outta research, not hatred of a company. I know u and I go at it a lot, but this isn't about bickering its about wether u post outta research or hatred. Tell me something when you make these posts about Apple is this based on ironclad evidence or is this based on your hatred of Apple do you have ironclad evidence that Apple is about to close all the stores and never be heard from again? Do you have evidence ironclad and that Apple stock is about to hit zero their market share their market cap value is about to hit zero and add out to crash and burn and just disappear into the abyss after falling off this Deep cliff that you posted yesterday? As I said I know you and I argue from time to time but this is a serious question I am not trying to bash you please give me an intelligent answer

ok since you ask sincerely I will give you a sincere reply. I dont prefer writing essays in comments hence my comments are short and maybe that's why you have misinterpreted them as hatred. I do my research through various sources but in this case lets refer to a common source like PhoneArenaa - a platform which you and I use. Now I think you and I can both agree that Apple focuses heavily on marketing. If the new iDevices have sold in a record-breaking manner then where are the extraordinary, revolutionary and out of this world sales figures to prove that? If there were and roof shatterin figures then I am sure Apple or any other company would have released them and PA would've been painted red with those articles. When previous iPhones released and they sold overwhelmingly well all news sites, tech sites, etc were talking about record numbers the iDevices were achieving! But not so much this year...wonder wwhy? All Apple keeps saying is that their demand is galactically supreme but my friend in business statistics its all about the numbers. If Apple is the iron-fisted dominating president of the tech galaxy then where are the numbers to prove it? Now Apple has been in a bad state before and they have come back very strong but in the fast changing world of tech a company can go up and down just as fast...remember RIM? And lets look at iDevices design now. I used to like iDevices design because they were good and inspiring. But are they perfect and hence Godly? No right! I mean their design is becoming quite stale now. They have a great design but they need to inroduce something new! Its like I bought a suit which was awesome but I can keep wearing it always. I am goona wanna try something new whcih might not be as good as my previous suit but still good enough and new! Their design is great but when are they goona give something new to their loyal customers like yyou who defend them with everything they've got against people like me? Apple have great design but they're far from perfect...their design is not the pinnacle nor the limit of tech design so there's always room for improvement and new stuff which they haven't done! Now what I am goona say here dont take it the wrong way. The factors that I mention do not have a gigantic impact at the moment but a whole lot of these liitle things are what contribute to the downfall of a company. If apple fails not tomorrow but in due time then a few years down the line we all will be reading these little things in articles and case studies as what led to the fall of a tech giant. A few years ago RIM was the master with little chinks here and there but now look at them we read about them in articles all the time as to the little thinngs that they ignored. The factors I mentioned above are trend indicators as to the attitude of a company. Jony Ive better start designing better stuff rather than design his $17.5 million mansion.

"remember RIM?" Who is RIM? I am sorry, it was an opportunity I just couldn't pass up. They (RIM) are about to lose more business from the U.S. Dept of Defense - DISA is out with a procurement that is the start of the move away from RIM.

its cool :) Who can blame DISA? The way RIM is going BB may never see the light of day! They have been really slow even with BB10 and their upcoming handsets!

The article didn't say Apple sold 26.5 million iP5s.... Just 26.5 million iPhones of all variations (4, 4S, and 5; may also have included 3GS as well, since 3GS was on sale during the reporting period).

Do we have any intelligent APPLE fans on P.A.? All I see are ones that post or write a statement - call it a fact - then, we shoot it down - they run off, crying and heads between their legs - no wonder there are not many iphoners on here. I would be embarrassed, too, to admit that I bought an iphone. Bad enough the wife has a 4S and somedays she wants to throw it.

And u said that to say what exactly? Nothing u said translates n the real world, due to the fact that there r different strokes for different folks. Fan bases exist my man, as do other people's opinions and needs coupled with Eco systems that fit that individual. My point is what u like the next person may not, what u hate the next person may love. It's called personal preference, aka choice.

I thought the number would be smaller, but there are 200 million Money > Sense people around... No company has been as successful as Apple in advertising such an overrated phone.

This would mean 49 million iPhones on average per quarter.. Let's just say I wouldn't put my bets on that. Not by a long shot

16. Aeires unregistered

Does look ridiculous when put into perspective. Maybe the analyst meant 200 million iOS units. But to steal a page from iFan books, "analysts are just predictions, they're never right." At least that's what they say when analysts make positive predictions about Android.

Well, to widen the perspective- they do also predict Samsung will sell 300 million smartphones - which translates into a staggering 73 million Galaxies per quarter (i'm generously taking away 2 million for WP samsung phones :p) The point being, market will grow for sure, but i still can't see Apple having such a high average, considering their usually fluctuating curve. An average of up to 45m seems more like it(35m low/55m high)
