This is what Google Maps will look like with its Material design makeover
We've been seeing the steady march of Material design coming to the various Google apps, and Google Maps is the latest to have its new look shown off. Obviously, the maps themselves won't look different, but everything else in the app will get color, layers, and animation, both on Android and iOS with this update.

Google says that the new design will make it easier to "know just where to touch to get directions, recommendations and imagery." Place cards have the new color scheme and icons, and items will slide in and out. Of course, the update isn't all about the visual changes, there are a couple of nice new features. First is OpenTable integration (for US users), which will allow you to make reservations at a restaurant directly in the app. There is also better Uber integration; so, if you have the Uber app installed, you can not only call for a car, but see an estimate of the pickup time and cost for the ride, in addition to how long it will take to get to your destination.

Google says that the update should be rolling out in the next couple days to both Android and iOS.

This looks sick. Now I have to change from HERE to Google maps just to enjoy this design.

YouTube Material App will be great, as long as they fix their lagging, pausing and not buffering issues I guess.

Hey Google, have you met translucent bars?

They have actually... they use different bars for different settings. That way the notification bar is easier to see in certain situations, and less noticeable in others. Same is true for the on-screen navigation buttons. Good try though..

Don't tell me they stay with the black bar because it would be difficult to see otherwise, check the screenshots from the iOS app, I like it better!

Wow, already got it on my Z3. Looks great, I think it could use some more material design aspects actually though.

About time. The look of it before was too plain and boring

Might of been plain and boring before but didn't navigate no one to drive off a cliff like crapp!e maps does.

I love Google map. But there are two things I don't like and hope improving. The one is the behavior when I receive phone call. App doesn't close, but when I receive a call map disappears and phone app shows up. It's so dangerous especially when I'm driving in an unfamiliar place. The other is that sometimes Google map lies. So far I was navigated to wrong place two times. Google map says there is the store there, but actually there isn't. But, Google map is the best navigation app.

The biggest problems that I have with google maps are: 1. it goes slient. sometimes the voice works while navigation and sometimes it doesn't. it is very unconvenient. 2. even the saved locations are stored online. And fetching that data taked longer time than the maps itself. When I am in low coverage area, fetching saved location is one hell of a wait.

I have the new map and it is beautiful. I agree with mobi_user that at times , it is just silent. I thught it was because I did not choose navigation.
