Sony Xperia XZ4 Compact renders reveal large bezels, bulky design

Sony certainly has an extensive smartphone lineup planned for early 2019. Aiming to compete in the low-end and mid-range segments, the Japanese brand should be releasing the Xperia L3, XA3, and XA3 Ultra in the early new year. These will then be followed by the Xperia XZ4 flagship and the smaller XZ4 Compact, as revealed by a new set of renders.

Despite using a pretty curvy design on the Xperia XZ2 Compact, Sony appears to have reverted back to a much more angular look on the upcoming model. This creates the illusion of bulkiness but, in actual fact, the provided dimensions confirm that this new model is almost 3mm thinner than the current device.

Taking a look at the front panel, Sony has once again chosen to fit the device with an 18:9 display that sits somewhere between 5 and 5.2-inches in size. Despite the tall panel, though, a pair of pretty huge bezels, at least by today’s standards, can be found above and below the display. These are home to the front-facing stereo speakers.

In regards to the rear, the Xperia XZ4 Compact resembles some of Sony’s more recent mid-range offerings by positioning the camera and LED flash in the top-left corner. Unfortunately, though, no information about the sensor included has been provided. Same goes for the selfie camera up front. On a separate note, it’s worth noting that the device comes equipped with a side-mounted fingerprint scanner and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Alongside these renders no specifications were provided. But if Sony’s release history is anything to go by, the Xperia XZ4 Compact should be powered by Qualcomm’s newly-announced Snapdragon 855 paired with at least 4GB of RAM. Additionally, 64GB of internal storage and Android 9 Pie straight out of the box are to be expected.

I'm glad that the Compact line isn't dead.

Sony is stupid, they seriously are giving us a choice between either a very very very tall and narrow phone that is significantly taller than the already way too tall note 9, oneplus 6t, iphone xs max etc and with not so thin top and bottom bezel and the other choice is a tiny narrow 18:9 5-5.2 inches with big bezels. Sony is high

The last xz premium was way too heavy, sony just cant get it right. I dont hate sony and i would consider buying one of their flagships if they get it right.

It should have had like a 4300mah battery, then the weight would be justified, not the tiny one it had.

I have zero issue with those bezels. People who keep pushing them to get smaller have no idea what they're really asking for.

I only use Sony phones, but everything they came up with after the Z3 was pure garbage. I lost hope that they'll ever come up with anything decent anymore.

You've been using Sony phones and you think that everything after the Z3 is garbage? Then why didn't you stop using them after the Z3? I think I'll soon stop writing to this section because I think I just chat with kids.

Who said I kept buying them? I had every flagship before the Z3 and I'm still using it. Please no disrespect without thinking.

I didn't think they would put the headphone jack back. Looks like a great compact device.

So called "compact". s9/s10 (or similar rivals) have and will have the same dimensions AND much bigger display. Sony mobile lost it a long time ago.

Sony’s mobile division is clueless.

Totally acceptable design if it had been released 5 years ago... I actually mean it, this looks almost identical to Z3 Compact apart from taller display and side mounted fingerprint scanner lol. It's good that it's got a headphone jack though, it makes me wonder why its much larger sibling can't have one.

I remember the not so distant past where people on these boards would line up to defend the "necessity" of big bezels. Thankfully the masses have figured it out and are demanding the size of their devices be filled with display instead of useless space. We're getting there. And as for Sony and these relics if the past. They'll sell dozens!

Isn't weird? The "L3" looks better and with dual camera.

This can't be legit. It would be a huge step back in design from the XZ2 compact. This looks like a worse version of the Z3 compact.

No matter how many times you ask Sony to reduce their bezels, they still manage to make it huge.

Doubt this is the Compact high end, even xz2 Compact is looking nicer. Probably the low end one for sure.

Why they don't make a 5.5" phone witha a thiny bezels?? 1mm side bezels and about 4-5mm up and chin. That will be gorgeous

That was my big hope for their new compact smartphone, at least similar to pixel 3.
