Pixel, Pixel XL owners have unlimited free storage of original photos and videos for life

When the Google Pixel and Google Pixel XL models rolled out last year, Google promised owners of the two devices unlimited free storage of original quality photos and videos in Google Photo. No expiration date was ever mentioned. So when the word came from Mountain View that Google Pixel 2 and Google Pixel 2 XL owners will get the same treatment of their photos and videos, but only through the end of 2020, beads of sweat started to drip off owners of the first-gen models. Would their unlimited storage of original quality photos and videos also expire after three more years?

According to Google, the answer is "No!" While pictures and videos taken by Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL owners will still be stored on an unlimited basis after 2020, the images will be uploaded in "high-quality." Note that this is considered a slight drop-off from original quality.

It is rare when an earlier version of a particular model phone gets a better feature than the newer sequel. But in this case, Pixel and Pixel XL owners will get to store photos and videos in original quality for their lifetime. Owners of the two sequels have only three years to enjoy the same.

im sure google has some fine print in TOS for the pixel 1 that will allow them to change it and im betting they will down the line. theyve cancelled many apps out of the blue consistently.

You Apple zealots have to look at something that is good, and try to turn it into a negative. How much do you have to pay for iCloud storage for 4 years? Say only 200 GB is $192 for 4 years, and that has a low limit. If you want 2 terabytes of iCloud storage for 4 years it will cost you $670. Yet this amount of storage for the Pixels or even the Pixel 2 is unlimited.

If you are with Android, then why are you so negative towards Google? Most likely they can easily give the Pixels lifetime unlimited storage, because almost every smartphone has an enclosed battery that will ware out over time. Not to mention more and more features arrive every year. So with that said the vast majority of the population will most likely move on to another smartphone after a few years. Besides that, if you get a newer Pixel, then you will get unlimited storage for a number of years once again.

Not every criticism about Google or Android are from Apple fans, this is getting ridiculous.

I have a question: What will happen when you sell your pixel, or recycle it, or throw it away? Does the free for life continue with your google account as it gets linked with it, or will it stop being applied since I'm uploading from a non-pixel 2-3 years from now? I'm banking on the latter, which makes 2020 pretty good since you're not going to use a phone for more than 3-4 years anyway.

Not going to use a phone for more than 3-4 years? I used mine for 8 years. If not only for the scroll key that got lost, i might be still using it until now. Oh and my current phone is almost 4 years with me. And it looks like i will be using it for another 4 years.

No they sell anonymous data collected from gmail accounts and connected devices. Completely different and even Apple does that.

I am sure you get to keep the storage forever no matter what. But on the other hand you do make a good point. I think the reason for the 2020 deadline is to encourage you to upgrade to a new pixel every two years as such you can not keep upgrading your phone to keep the feature. Otherwise I am sure people could upgrade to another device and keep the storage and get a different phone. That would not work well for anybody. But than again you store all your photos with google and they have dedicated Costemer base that may very well use other google products.

I think you meant this comment as a reply to mine. Please use the reply button, makes it a lot easier. Yes, you do keep the storage no matter what. But the photos you upload from that moment onwards with your new(non-pixel!) phone don't get stored in original quality. What one can do otherwise is keep a pixel 1 as a device of cloud, purchase another phone, say, 2 years from now, and transfer the photos to pixel 1 every time he wants to back them up. You can even make an app to automatically do that. Then again, we can store high-quality(not original quality) pics on google photos anyway, and the quality is good enough. So I don't really care.

It’s funny because it’s true. Once you store your pictures onto the ‘cloud’ (whether google or otherwise) your photos are on there forever. The only thing you’re doing when you delete it is giving up your rights/access to the photo.

I am definitely curious if when I go to the Pixel 2 do I keep my unlimited storage but I doubt I really care by 2020

"Free for life"... yeah right, as if that isn't a typical bait and switch tactic. Even if it isn't, Google could renege on that deal any time they want after they've taken your money, companies do this all the time. Also, cloud storage is just their way of squeezing more money out of you by slowly forcing you into paying a continuous subscription instead of just a one time payment.

False advertisement in news. If I buy Pixel and sell it after one week (say even after one year) will I be able keep my unlimited storage forever ? I'm sure - not...
