March 19th update to Starbucks' iOS app will let you tip your barista using your iPhone

On March 19th, Starbucks will be updating its iOS app to add tipping capabilities. Now, you can tip your barista at the same time you pay for your coffee using the app. That should put a smile on the face of the barista, assuming you do tip him. And a new "shake to pay" feature will allow you to call up your Starbucks card from anywhere in the app.

After you make your payment, the app will encourage you to leave anywhere from 50 cents to as much as $2.00 in the store's virtual tip jar. And just in case the caffeine kicks in and enhances your mood, you can adjust your tip for up to two hours after you leave the store. Don't forget your digital receipt!

With 10 million iOS users, Starbucks' mobile app is a definite revenue generator for the coffee house. According to Chief Digital Officer Adam Brotman, 11% of its daily transactions are conducted over the mobile app. That works out to a stunning 5 million transactions handled by the app each week. That is a lot of beans.
