HMD to launch two new flagships this year, Nokia 9 and Nokia 8 Pro incoming?
Finnish company HMD Global pretty much nailed it at MWC 2018, but many good things are still about to happen to Nokia fans. Although Nokia 8 Sirocco is the company's new flagship smartphone, at least two other top-tier Nokia-branded phones will be released by the end of the year.

If you believe Nokia 8 Sirocco leaves to be desired when it comes to the camera or other aspects that you think should offer more in terms of features, HMD plans to launch the Nokia 8 Pro and Nokia 9.

Even though we don't know what names HMD will use for these phones, sources with knowledge about the company's plans claim the Nokia 9 will be the better phone. It will boast a slightly larger 5.7-inch display, whereas the Nokia 8 Pro is said to include a 5.5-inch screen. Their specifications haven't been confirmed though, so take it with a pinch of salt for now.

However, one of the main selling points of the Nokia 9 will be the long-rumored penta-lens camera module, which won't come with the Nokia 8 Pro. Also, rumor has it, Nokia 9 will be HMD's first smartphone to feature an in-display fingerprint sensor. Both phones will be equipped with Snapdragon 845 processors, but they may come with different amounts of memory.

Price-wise, Nokia 9 is expected to cost around the same as other major flagships coming this year, such as the Samsung Galaxy S9. Still, the Nokia 8 Pro will be much cheaper to offer consumers a better alternative to the likes of Samsung Galaxy S9, LG G7, and HTC U12.

The report suggests HMD plans to unveil the Nokia 8 Pro sometime in August, while the Nokia 9 should be revealed at least one month later.

It sounds like a Nokia 808/1020 successor. If this so called 'penta-lens' system will be equipped with relatively big sensor (bigger than currently the biggest Sony's 1/2.3), then I'm sold. Whatever the other specs will be, if Nokia delivers such spectacular camera I will buy it. For me it won't matter if there is an older SoC or the size of the screen that I don't like, just bring some groundbreaking spec in terms of camera and you have my money (even with the iphone X price tag). I beg you Nokia, don't let me and other mobile camera enthusiasts down.

Agreed. I just need it to actually be available and compatible with the US and its networks.

But will HMD Global bring them to North America?...

Man, I hope so. I know that their strategy has been to release handsets in select markets where they know the Nokia brand is in heavy demand, and it’s been working for them, but I really want to see some Nokia flagships released in North America. Here’s to hoping that answer is “Hell Yeah!”

I agree MG, and I think they have what it takes to make it here. Though I'm sure they know their business better than I do, and at the end of the day it's about maximizing their return on investment.

I've been begging and wishing for them to do that for so long it just seems pointless now. I don't know why they can't do it. The technology to really drive the physical hardware the Nokia 808 and Lumia 1020 had is available today. The time is right if only they would give it one more look.

If Nokia doesn't make a true successor to those devices, there will be no words to describe their stupidity. Without a remarkable camera, they will never ever reach huge sales. Right now it's the best time to release a cameraphone like Nokia 808 since people are bored with everything that is available on the market. People start to realise that to exceed the current image quality we need a bigger sensor, everything else is a gimmick. I always wonder why Sony hasn't tried to make a cameraphone. They had a wonderful Cybershot series. I still remember my friends reactions to the image quality of Sony-Ericsson K800i. What is sad is that Sony's flagships have always had the worst image quality of all manufacturers. What is wrong with you guys? Can't you take some advice from your camera division? If there are no real improvements in cameras this year I will get of the high-end wagon and buy a decent mid-range phone like Nokia 7 plus and a seperate compact camera with a huge sensor like Ricoh GRII. PS to all comapnies: There is a huge amount of people who don't care about slim dimensions, bezel-less fronts etc. What we need is a huge camera sensor and a huge battery.

I like the design of Nokia 8 Sirocco... I hope they will make new version with bigger display and fingerprint sensor under it and with useful stylus

I prefer display with 16:9 aspect ratio because of this I like this phone but the display of it is small in comparison with other phones like Note8

Right now, the only Android smartphone manufacturer that has my eye is HMD/Nokia. They are the only Android OEM that could sway me back to Android from my recent joining of #TeamiOS. Their handsets are the most compelling of Android OEM’s, IMO. Definitely want to see these Nokia Flagahips.

Oh Why you switched to Apple?

I am not, and never have been, an Android fan. I only used it because my favorite OEM’s made Android smartphones and iOS wasn’t where I personally needed it to be so I can use it as my daily driver. I feel iOS is there now, so I’m using an iPhone 8 Plus as my daily driver now, and plan on using iPhones as my daily driver smartphone driver for the foreseeable future. But I can be swayed by HMD/Nokia. Although, I do miss the physical keyboard on BlackBerry devices, it’s not enough to bring me back to Android.

The only Nokia I will consider at this point is a true 808/1020 successor.

HTC U Ultra, Sony XZs, Nokia 8 Sirocco.. I dont understand why those devices are made. Old cpu, they cost almost same of their true flagship brothers. Not much different from previous version.

Very good point. It is not their fault for bringing devices with older chipsets. Samsung is twisting the market by reserving every year the first batches of the newest Snapdragons. They have two options: 1. To continue selling their older devices, which in comparison to the newly presented Galaxy S 9 for example, look like grandmas 2. Or to present something refreshed, until they receive their contemporary Snapdragon. By choosing the second option, they hope to bite off a piece of the Sammy’s cake. Does it work? I am not quite sure.
