Google Photos will now help you free up space by deleting pictures
A Google Photos update should roll out today, giving users a new function – a “Free up space” button should appear somewhere in the app. It will let you easily delete a large bulk of pictures from your device, while keeping them backed up and safe in the Photos cloud. The Photos assistant will also suggest to Free up space if you happen to be running out of storage space.

Additionally, from today you will be able to go to photos.google.com/settings and choose to downgrade all of the pictures that you have uploaded in “Original quality” down to “High quality”, Why would you do that? Well, Original quality photos take up precious Drive space, which you have to pay for beyond 15 GB, while High quality photos will not count towards your Drive storage, and you can have an unlimited amount of those backed up in your Photos cloud.
