Fun dates to look forward to: April 1st and May 4th

Reading and reporting about the mobile technology industry is fun. The whole industry is fiercely competitive, but because it is also such a creative sector, a lot of folks know when to not take themselves too seriously and have some fun.

April Fool’s Day is just such an occasion to drive the media mad, and entertain the fans. In fact, you can count a lot of the news that day to be dominated by jokesters to one degree.

We do not know what, or if, the tech wizards at Google, Sony, or any one of dozens of other companies are planning to put forth in the name of a good laugh. Motorola had a great feature last year, offering up a boot screen that highlighted everything from Big Foot to UFOs. The year before in 2013, Google offered up Gmail Blue, and YouTube announced it was closing, citing an eight-year-long competition to find the greatest video of all time.

Spring is not just about April Fool’s Day though, we have May the Fourth to look forward to as well. An impromptu play on the ageless line from Star Wars’, “May the force be with you,” the fourth day in May has quickly whipped up a faithful following of fun ideas and takes we have seen from Apple, Google, Microsoft, and a number of wireless carriers.

So brace yourselves, be ready to take a breather from the mundane daily grind, take a breath, and have what we hope will be a good laugh.
