Fresh leak reveals new camera features and more for the Apple iPhone 11 line

Some new information pertaining to the upcoming 2019 Apple iPhone models has been leaked. According to 9to5Mac, the model known internally as D42 (iPhone12,3) will replace the iPhone XS. D43 (iPhone12,5) is the sequel to the iPhone XS Max, and N104 (iPhone12,1) will be the new "more affordable" iPhone taking over for the iPhone XR. The screen resolution sizes of all three phones will remain the same. So the D42 will sport a 5.8-inch OLED display with a resolution of 1125 x 2436. The D43 will be equipped with a 6.5-inch OLED screen with a 1242 x 2688 resolution, and the D43 will carry a 6.1-inch LCD screen featuring a resolution of 828 x 1792.

As expected, the 2019 iPhones will not come with a Type-C port; that's the word from those who have allegedly seen the new models. Apple's proprietary Lightning charger will be used on the company's handsets for perhaps the last time. Apple is expected to include a Type-C to Lightning dongle in the box. We also expect Apple to toss in an 18W charging brick instead of the 5W one that it has been handing out to iPhone buyers. Currently available from Apple for $29, consider this a hard-earned gift from the gang in Cupertino this year.

Today's report also reiterates that 3D Touch is no more. Already removed on the iPhone XR (supposedly because of the LCD panel), all three units will go without this feature in 2019 and probably beyond. Instead, Apple is including something with the code name of leap haptics. Without 3D Touch, Apple might be looking to improve the Haptic Touch feature that is triggered with a long press on the screen as opposed to the hard press that activates 3D Touch. The improvements being made to Haptic Touch could make it easier for those who depend on 3D Touch to say goodbye to it. In addition, with iPadOS, Haptic Touch will make its debut on the iPad.

As for the rear cameras, you probably are already familiar with the square camera module that will appear on the upper left corner of the rear glass panel. You might not like the way it looks, but today's report indicates that it will indeed be on the new models. The iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Max will each have three cameras housed in the module (a primary camera, telephoto camera, and a wide-angle camera). The new wide-angle sensor will reportedly include a feature called Smart Frame that has several functions. Users can adjust the framing of an image, or have it cropped automatically in the processing process. The unused part of the photo will be saved for a limited time and then deleted. The iPhone 11R will have two rear cameras (primary + telephoto). The front-facing FaceTime cameras on all three phones will support 120fps slo-mo recording.

While not mentioned in the report, we expect to see the phones come with larger batteries to support the reverse wireless charging feature that Apple will supposedly include with its 2019 phones. Similar to Samsung's PowerShare (which itself was "borrowed" from the Huawei Mate 20 Pro), the rear glass panel on the new models can serve as a wireless charging pad to replenish the batteries in the AirPods wireless charging case, an Apple Watch, or a Qi-compatible phone. Of course, the host phone will be using some of its battery power in this process.

There seems to be more excitement over the rumored specs of the 2020 iPhones. The early word is that there will be a 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Max, a 5.4-inch iPhone 12 and a 6.1-inch iPhone 12R. All three will carry OLED panels and the first two models will support 5G connectivity. Also, there is speculation about the return of Touch ID (an in-display fingerprint reader) and the elimination of the notch.
