AT&T hopes Motorola Kobe is a slam dunk
With all of the team-jumping that key players made in the NBA this off-season, we are not surprised that Kobe has decided to join AT&T. We are talking about the Motorola MB 520 Kobe, of course, a mid-range Android model destined to be launched from the carrier later this year. With a 3.5 inch display, this Kobe will be sporting Android 2.1 and Motoblur, but the word from the inside is that an OTA upgrade will take the handset up to Android 2.2. A 3MP camera adorns the back and the device will be launched with 512MB of RAM, 2GB of internal memory and a pre-installed 2GB microSD card.

With a name like Kobe, you would expect performance and sure enough, the phone finished behind just the DROID brothers (X and 2, respectively) in benchmark tests. Under the hood, the model shares the same Power VR GPU as those two DROID units, but has a somewhat slower 800MHz TI OMAP3 powering the handset. AT&T customers who feel that the Captivate is too loaded and the BACKFLIP is too plain, might find that the Kobe lands right in the middle. And for those Laker fans who are offended by the choice of name, there is some speculation that this model might end up being called Diablo.
