Windows Phone's new Driving Mode gets quick mention on NBC's Today show
On Monday, we told you about the GDR3 update for Windows Phone 8 that adds some new features and capabilities to many of those handsets running Microsoft's mobile OS. One of the new features is called Driving Mode which allows you to block texts and calls from coming through your phone while you are behind the wheel of a car. You can even set up an auto-response for both texts and calls, telling those seeking you out that you are behind the wheel of a powerful machine and can't be bothered.

On Tuesday, Driving Mode was highlighted on NBC's morning show Today, and while the entire clip lasts all of 15 seconds, it still is national exposure for a platform that always seems overshadowed by iOS and Android (which explains some of Microsoft's new ads including the Wedding Day disaster).

While the GDR 3 update will officially roll out later this year, developers and others can update their Windows Phone 8 handset now from Microsoft. Check out the Windows Phone Developer Blog to see how to update to GDR3 today. Meanwhile, you can check out the brief Today appearance of Driving Mode along with some screenshots from the new feature, below.

Relevance is a function of perspective.

8.1 is not GDR2. GDR2 was released earlier this summer, GDR3 is being released soon, and then 8.1 is set to be released in early 2014. In other words, there's no way you should have received WP 8.1 now, even accidentally. Considering GDR3 and 8.1 are as of yet unreleased to the general public, you more than likely received GDR2.

GDR3 update is already available, all you need is a FREE App Studio account (takes about 2 mins to create one). I already updated mine and no issues so far. :)

True but it can void the warranty. Wouldn't recommend putting it on anything other than an early-release 920 or 820/822/810

Moto Assist is much better than this. Windows Phone Driving Mode only detects you are in the car based on a connected bluetooth device. Moto Assist detects your driving based on accelerometers and GPS, even if your car doesn't have bluetooth. Furthermore Moto Assist doesn't ask you to confirm as Windows Phone appears to do.

I think WP's implementation is advantageous in certain respects as well. I wouldn't want it to be accelerometer based because I could be sitting in the passenger seat of a car and want to use my phone normally. In this situation, I wouldn't be connected to my bluetooth anyway because I wouldn't need it, so it would automatically be off. Also, I haven't experienced GDR3 yet, but I wouldn't imagine that they make you confirm the action while driving, as that would negate the whole purpose. What you see in the screenshots above are the Settings screens to set up the feature initially.

Driving Mode will get activated automatically when you pair your device to your car's Bluetooth. All you need to do is specify the car Bluetooth name when initially setting up the Driving Mode, once done you wont have to activate it manually each time. And if you wish to have GDR3, just create a Free App Studio account (http://apps.windowsstore.com/) and you can update it. I updated my L925 the same day Microsoft announced GDR3.

Did it give you a warning about the warranty being void? I'd like to update my 925 but I like having warranty coverage and the JUMP upgrade to a 2014 model.

yes, it did show a warning. But I really wanted to try it out so went on and installed it. Hope nothing will go wrong. everything is running fine as of now.. :)

My error, I was looking at another site which showed a confirmation dialog. Looks like that only shows up on the first usage. Agree that using the accelerometers can lead to the feature being enabled as a passanger, but there is an easy toggle to disable it when it enables itself. Moto version does speak the text messages to you, not sure why MS doesn't have this. None of these features are that complicated to implement and are far more useful than all the Samsung bloat.

Windows Phones do read text over Bluetooth. Just don't enable the Text portion of Driving mode and the Text portion will work as usual.

Yeah, as pookiewood said, Windows Phone does read text out loud over Bluetooth, and even allows you to respond voice-to-text over Bluetooth. This has been there from at least WP 7.5 from what I can remember. And yeah, obviously the setting is not very difficult to toggle on and off. I was just making the case that WP's implementation could arguably be considered as a more convenient "set it and forget it" implementation.

Yeah. You & your family would sit inside the car, car starts to move, and boom! Nobody's cellphone would work! And anyone sitting behind would ask you to stop the car everytime to send/receive a text. Seems a very clever implementation!

WP wont ask for any confirmation, it automatically gets activated when you pair your phone's bluetooth to your car.
